do you have to use dowl pins in aluminum rods? would like to run aluminum rods on the street. do not want to keep checking rod clearance.
I know people that have run them on the street, hot and cold cycles are the potential issues, but no failures that I know of......what do dowel pins have to do with checking rod clearance? Is there something I'm missing?

the dowl pin is in the bearing, won't it come in contact with the rod journal at some point?

If it does you have bigger problems.
Bearings don't wear like that if the proper clearance is set to start.
the rod dowel pin shouldn't protrude into the bearing shell more than half the thickness of the bearing shell
so leaving the dowl pins in (on the street)should'nt be a problem.

Do yourself a favor and set one of the rods up at room temperature with the rod bearings installed that your going to use and torque the rod bolts to the manufacturers specs, clamp it in a vice first between two pieces of wood sideways or use a rod vise so you don't try to twist the rod sideways against the beams(same thing on loosening it, between the wood so you don't twist the beams). Then check the inside diameter of the rod bearing and write it down. then heat up a regular oven,DO NOT use a microwave to 200 F and put the rod in it for 5 to 10 minutes, remeasure the I.D. of the rod bearing and compare the two measurements Let us know how much the clearances change( I haven't done that personelly yet, I would like to ) My message is that aluminum rods expand quite a bit more than the steel bearing does so the bearing can become smaller inside the rods when hot compared to when thier cold, hence the dowels to help keep the bottom rod bearings centered in place while running. Keep them dowels in there
