I got my timing set and aluminum cover from GregZ.. With the dual scale on the crank gear, how do I set this up for initial timing? I am going to be degreeing the cam also. So what is the "proper" way to do this with a JP timing set? I assume the lower scale gets set with the 0 at the top center of the crank. With #1 at top dead center. Then the 0 on the upper scale would be for the cam. Do I line these up to meet or what..? What about the dot in the cam gear? I still need to figure out my pushrod length to get them ordered. I know I need those for the process too..

with # 1 at TDC install the upper and lower gers dot to dot. if this is the 9 keyway lower gear and you plan on installing the cam 4 degrees advanced, instead of using the 0 on the lower gear, turn it 2 key slots to the right as your looking at it from the front of your engine and install it that way instead. if the cam, gears and crank key are all in the proper location you should be right where you need to be. of course degree the cam to be sure.

It is a 9 keyway. Thats why I was wondering. I didn't see the dot on the crank gear..

normally there is a 0, a triangle and a square embossed into the lower gear.

My JP 9 position timing set has numbers (-8,-6,-4,-2, 0,+2,+4,+6,+8) for both the crank key, and the matching tooth to align with the cam sprocket dot. The package has the instructions on the inside (fold out).

And to think I was gonna throw the package away. I opened the package only enough to get the chain and gears out.
