I can't get the in/out put shafts seperated.I pulled them both out so I could see what is broke.

It's something to do with the steels/clutches and the annulus of the front planet , they seem to be stuck. I had a front and rear clutch stuck together once I ended up blowing the input shaft out of the piston retainer trying to press them apart .

There's a couple of things that can cause this; if the thrust washer between the input and output shaft pounds out, the pilot on the output shaft will peen over (mushroom)and get stuck behind the input shaft bushing but usually it's a clutch disc that's hung up. Sometimes I've had luck with using worm gear clamps to attach the shaft of a slap hammer to the input shaft and shock it apart.

On several occasions I've had to torch a window in the back of the driving shell to gain access to the rear clutch snap ring.

Thank for the tips!as further info the shell turns and then binds erratically, the shafts wont turn in opposite directions.I really appreciate the help. How about if I use a cutoff wheel and cut the shell off?

I agree and I could release the clutch snap ring and hopefully pull it appart.

Not if the shaft end is peened over the way John K is describing. Put the mainshft in soft jaws in a vice and slide hammer it if cutting the shell and releasing the clutches does not work.

You could drill a large hole in the shell to get to the snap ring instead of cutting it completely apart.

Doesn't look like the sun gear started the mayhem, more likely a pinion lost some teeth and turned into a meat grinder.

Or did the front planetary give up first??? They have failed before and there is lots of heavy duty options available.

I havent seen any HD versions made of sun gear, but lower gear ratio sets have different looking sun gear because of the lower gear ratio, maybe they are HD. I have one in my 727 but i dont know if its any beefier.

EDIT: John was faster

Just an FYI the planets are A&A stuff but only 3 gear.I just figured the sun went[2 teeth +/-]and the planets spun the parts into itself. The annulus is stuck on the planets but no hurry as it will be all new and like said a gear reduction[2.74/1.54] may be in order for a better 60' with the heavy car but I would need to stick with spiral cut not streight cut.
