Hello, I was always under the impression that my 1977 Stepside was a D150, It is badged as one and it is a heavy duty half-ton and doesn't require cats. I have the original build sheet and it says D100. I am curious if D150's were just different badges or actually a different model then the D100's. Thanks!

The GVWs were higher so they could avoid all the polution equipment. The standard spring ratings were higher on the D150s but D100s could be ordered with the higher rated springs as well.

D150's did not come along until mid year 77. The designation was primarly used for heavier gross vehicle rating...hence less emissions components.
They did get different badges. The rating for th 150's should be over 6000 GVWR...and is considered Heavy Duty Emissions...thru 1978 for federal.

Interesting stuff! Previous owner said it was a warlock, Had the stripes around the dash and on the doors still, But I am thinking the dealership might have just added the warlock pinstriping to an already highly optioned truck to get it out the door as the Warlock Code Is not on the Build Sheet. I am going to have to slap some D100 badges on it.

OK so it is entirely possible for a 1977 that is a D100 with a weight over 6000 to be badged D150?

Put it this way. Its just a badge. Halftons(100/150) have an axle roaring of 3300# Most 3/4tons(200/250)are the same. Some 3/4tons have the 4400# axle rating. You would think all 1tons(300/350) would be 4400# rating. Well I found out that is Not true. My crewcab needs rotors and I came across a kid parting a 350 on craigslist. The dam thing was Hilton suspension. 3300# rated axle for a "1ton" The dumbist thing ever.

Yeah, I live in Arizona and I really enjoy sticking it to the man and not having to run cats!

I bought a 76 and a 78 new. In 76 it was a suspension option on a D100 and the truck came through with no emission controls. The 78 was badged as a D150 and it was the same package.
I tell you it was a great vehicle to buy in the mid 70's, the cars were full of emissions jeejaws and hoses and none of them did any good anyway. Pop the hood on a 150 and it was clean as a whistle under there.

Yeah it's great! If I remember correctly (its been awhile since my truck has ran) All they look for is a PCV valve.

My '87 D100 was used by the first owner to pull a 5th wheel trailer. I never saw the trailer so I don't know how big a 5th wheel it was, but the evidence is still in the bed (holes for 5th wheel mount and a female electrical connector in the driver side inner bed wall). I have not counted the spring leaves, but it does ride stiff. Amazingly enough the power train is (for now) 318/2 barrel/727 and 8.25 axle!

I have my '76. It's a D100 rated at 06100. Enough to keep the Cats of it. Smog gave me a bit of a fit, till they realized it was over 06000.

I know but we also got into GVWR One time I went to emissions and they gave me a hard time because the Vin was only on the door and not on the core support because it broke off. "Im going to pass you, But you could have easily replaced the door with a different vin." Oh really? Like it is any harder to put a new core support on that has a different Data Plate?

Like Sam stated the 50's labeling came in mid 77.
I've found that Dodge had 2 axle ratings available on their trucks. My 73 W200 had a lite and a heavy duty axle. No W250 in 73. My 92 D350 came with a 3600lb front axle or the Cummins like mine has the 4000lb axle. No D300 in 92.

The D100/150 stuff is confusing. My 81 stepside is a D150, originally a /6. The 88 shorty I had was a D100 with a 318. My research showed that in 88 to get a 360 it had to be a D150...

I am truckless..

Ya they got a little weird there for a while before dropping the D100. Same with Ford. F100 was a 1/2T and the F150 was a 5/8T for a few years.
