hey guys, I just traded for a 93 d150 extended cab. It has a mag 318 and has been converted to a 833 3speed overdrive. It has some drivability issues. It has a poor idle and sometimes its just pig rich. also it will sometimes act like it has a bad accelerater pump, "stumbles" Anybody have any experience tuning these up? am i better off just scrapping the efi and putting a carb/intake on it?

first thing to do, is see what codes it's throwing.

ok codes, its throwing.
12- codes have been reset
22-coolant sensor voltage low
37-ptl- part throttle lock up(no longer has auto) 45-turbo boost/map shows overboost (not a ctd?)
55- end of list
i undrestand that the cooland sensor will cause some issues, but this thing runs way rich upon start up. the code 45 has me curious too. is it telling me that the map sensor is bad?

bad map sensor will have pig rich drivabilty problems

thats manifold absolute pressere(telss putor how much air id moving thru throttle body throut)

temp sensor will keep it in a open loop for warm up(like a choke is on when it should be open/off)

the intake plenum gaskets could be sucking air/oil and putor is trying to compensate for the airleak.

o2 sensors will make it run poorly with rich idle/poor mpg

stuck egr can cause it to stumble when cold and run poorly.

have the auto computor reflashed for a 4-5 speed manual 5.2 magnum, the lco up mode maybe causeing issure with the computor and engine controls

better to change it to carb?? maybe maybe not.

I do know I wont have one, I cant afford to nickle & dime it, with out $ and knowhow it can be expensive to fool with MPFI.

not knocking it, I just dont understand it enuff to waste my $ on it when I get better performance/mpg from a 35-40 yr old q-jet with a set of points thats been converted.

there is a local speed shop that does this with gas and diesel trucks rice tuners ect. techno geeks for sure with bad azz toys.

I stoped in and asked if they could tune my 40 yr old q-jet with points dist and they said they could not.

but they flashed my sons auto 5.2 ram 1500.and that got it broke with a quickness.

I do know a carb and intake, points dist with a pertronix conversion will drop right in a 5.2 DAK with out breaking the bank.

Problem is state emissions testing in a lot of Texas counties.

That's not much of an issue here. It has to pass a visual inspection. With an air cleaner on it nobody would be the wiser. Getting rid of the efi system is not a huge issue. I think that if I can get the system back running correctly, it would be a more reliable and efficient truck.
