I am assuming a Dart or Barracuda? I assume you are talking about the bellhousing mounting rail on the engine, they started putting the VIN on them early in the 68 model year, hopefully it matches the VIN on your car!

Well this is the engine that was in my 68 charger, a st louis car. If it can be deciphered to be someones engine, I'let them have it. I'm making my 383 2 bbl plain jane into a R/T tribute.
The numbers are no where near my vin.

That is interesting! If it were an A-Body 383 then it will have holes drilled into the block above the oil pump boss and the rear driver's side boss for the top motor mount hole will be shaved off, so a regular B-Body mount top hole will have nowhere to bolt on!

What in the last 8 makes you assume A body?

Just trying to learn, thanks.

Both mounting bosses are present. I'll hafta look harder for more numbers, hopefully I can find some more. I can tell you it was cast on day shift on 12/7/67.

Engine & automatic transmission from a 383 4bbl Charger: XP29H8B239224 - "scheduled" to be built on Friday December 15, 1967. I don't know the car or if it still exists.

Can you get the info off of the driver's side transmission pan rail.

I misunderstood - ONLY the OP's subject engine is stamped at the parting line - not both.

Transmission appears to be the original 727 to your car & won't have a partial VIN# stamping.

transmission PK2801543K (383 2bbl) 2442 (Thursday 4/4/68) 9524 (unit number)

Your Charger was built mid-April '68.

Thanks so much Dan. At least now I know the trans is legit. Hopefully someone out there has this car, I'll trade em engines. Anybody in Arkansas know the block? That's where my car came from.

Thanks, John - the OP's example is a stamped engine (383 4bbl) not original to his car & an unstamped transmission (727 for a 383 2bbl) original to his car.

I went back & read the entire post - is the OP's partial VIN stamped engine a 383?

What's stamped on the block below the distributor?

D383 12 212. Thanks guys, these are the numbers I found on the pad. This engine has been orange since I bought this car in 96. I can't find any turquoise paint, I guess it must've been stripped at some point.

D383 12 212

D = 1968 model year
383 = 383 cu.in.
12 = December
21 = 21st of month (Thursday 12/21/67)
2 = second shift

So, this 12/15 "scheduled" (C15-SPD) Charger was 6+ days late.*

* unless the numbers on the stamped pad got messed up & it's actually 12/12/67 and second shift

D = 1968 model year
383 = 383 cu.in.
12 = December
2 = second shift
12 = 12th of month (Tuesday 12/12/67)

Is there anything stamped on the bottom, below the starter mounting?
