I think I like the R&D the most also. Sometimes I lay awake at nite thinking of crazy stuff to try on the dyno. Sometimes it works to my amazement, sometimes I'm mopping up the floor. Dave
LOL... glad I'm not the only one laying awake in bed thinking up stuff or thinking through a problem

Heads are one thing I've done once and that was enough. Same with final paint. All else I try to do myself. Sheet metal on the body, cage, axle, trans ,engine ,wiring, fab. Doug

Yep, pretty much the only way we can afford to do this. Especially in the beginning it was the ONLY way I could swing any kind of car. Nowadays it is just part of the sport and the best way to learn this stuff.

I always cringe when I watch the videos of guy's rearends flying out of the cars on launch because the 1/2" thick pile of metallic bird droppings they applied with their 110v Harbor Freight Flux Core Mig didn't actually do anything to hold the parts together.
Yeah. You gotta know when to hand it off to a pro for sure!
At one time I use to have a air craft cert... I wanted it just to say that I have it(I never worked in the air craft business) but I have let the cert laps... it was free for me... Chrysler sent me to welding school and I never turned down any schooling .. it was funny when the instructor seen my first weld and asked why I was there.. I told him why and he laughed

I try and do everything myself, I enjoy doing a lot of it. I am doing a 25.5 cage myself at the moment and its been great. Just to save time I am having a friend do the engine, with a bunch of my mad scientist ideas. I am working on the intake for it at them moment. My wife will often say to me "You're thinking about something for your car again, aren't you!" So it's reassuring to know I am not the only one who spends most of my waking moments thinking ideas to try, or parts to make.
I am also reading The Horsepower Chain by Don Terrill, it has been great reading
