Dana 60, Rear end.
Detroit locker
The rear end howls but the wear pattern is perfect.

Could they be bad gears?

I am pretty sure the rear end is from a Ford pickup.
I see that there are gears for a dodge and a different set for a ford. Anyone know what the difference is?

Page 21
http://www.motivegear.com/pdf/LD_DIFFCAT_011_1.pdf

It appears that For 3.54 it is the same dodge or ford but 3.55 is different?

COuld this be part of the problem?

At my work we have had nothing but problems with gear noise on every set of motive gears. I even called them and they wont guarantee there gears to be quiet. They told us to run 250 weight oil. What a joke. I wont even put a set in any more. We had no problems when we were using Yukon gears. But the motive's were cheaper so that's why we started using them, After many hours of playing with the pattern all to find out the noise wont go away. I had used motive many years ago and didn't have a problem but now there gears seem to be junk. And this isn't just 1 set, I have had this happen on at least 15 - 20 different diffs.

Mostly holding on slight acceleration (is the loudest)

The diff guy said that the machining on the ring looks rougher, compared to other set and the 4.10 I removed.

What can you expect of a gear company that cant even etch the pinion depth on the pinion gear like richmond always did.

Motive bought Richmond and now there cheaper gearsets are Chinese made Richmonds basically. The Premium line of Motives are the ones to use but are unsually $240 plus.

Richmond and Motive Performance are now the same Italian product.

Most standard Motive gears are made in S Korea.

Any thoughts on why it is howling when the gear pattern looks good?

JMO... but I dont call that pattern good... it looks
like the surface is irregular... the edges of the
test area dont show a smooth line... it very well
could be the gear set not ground smooth

You are correct that the area is NOT ground smooth. I brought me old set in and they have a nice smooth finish. This set, you can feel the difference

That surface on the ring looks rough... you can see
grinding lines in it from your flash
