What are the differences between a 440 Marine Block (M440) and a non-marine block.

I assume that only the internal rotating assembly would be different, but would there be anything else different about the engine block, casting, etc... Are they a good block to use for rebuilding ?

Is there anyway to tell a Marine Block from a non-marine block (BESIDES) the M440 stamp on the pad ?

Does it use the same crank (it has a forged crank)?

Don't know about the block, but beware of the crank if it's from a reverse rotation motor. The knurling for the rear main goes the opposite way on these cranks.

If you're looking at a block that's been in salt water & used an "open" cooling system (pulls in water from outside the boat, circulates it, & spits it back out) be VERY wary of water jacket rust. I've personally been thru 2 marine blocks (one a 413, the other a Buick v6) that rusted thru the walls from the water jacket due to being used in salt water for many years.

otherwise nothing different , except if it's a reverse rotation and it's only ROTATING parts that will be different

We actually have had quite a few calls lately on the marine blocks. The other thing you have to watch is the direction of the oiling holes drilled in the crank. If you get a minute call here and talk to Dave and he can tell you everything we have learned about the differences in these engines.
