I have an older 1965? four speed and drive shaft that came with my 1969 car. My question is about the driveshaft. The drive shaft has four bolts that connect it to the tranny. There is a nuckle in the metal housing. It almost looks like there should be another knuckle the as well that would partially go into the tranny rear. If so I dont have it anyone know about these and tell me what is normal?

Thanks for any help.

It sounds like you got a ball and trunion drive shaft. That would be a 64 and older transmission it goes to.
Won't work with a 65 and up.
You would have to get the end cut off and the regular yoke put on. But it would just be easier to find another drive shaft.

sell the tranny and driveshaft to another member that needs it, and go find an original setup for your car.

I have the correct tranny that goes with it. It is that exact driveshaft. I am curious about the inside of the that end. should there only be one knuckle? It is recessed about 3/4". is this correct?

The 727 went to a slip yoke in '65 but the 833 didn't. First year for as slip yoke 833 was '66.

there is only one end like that. The part that goes into the rearend is normal.

not sure what you mean, but here is an exploded view.

The usually eat the spherical bearings pretty quickly. So you will get clunking when you shift into drive and reverse. But they will stand up to a lot of abuse.

To put it simply, that shaft does you no good. Those old shafts are expensive to rebuild, and you'd be better off just to sell the shaft and start over.

As long as the boot is good and it has grease they are almost bullet proof.I still have the OE one in my 65 with a 440 4 speed pushing 600 horse.Ive snapped a lot of rear joints but the B&T is still holding.Your problem is the shaft will probally be too short for a later car as the front spring segment chaned lengths in 67.Rocky

Great information

Thanks everyone. I am using it because it is what I have and came with the car. I does fit. The only thing I semm to be missing is the grease cover. Thanks again for the info and the diagram.

I have a Very Original 65 Sport Fury 383 Automatic that has the bolt on drive shaft, it is an early car. The Plymouth was a low mileage car and I am sure that I am the first to ever drop the drive shaft.
