Hello,

Please view the attached pictures. I recently had my cylinder heads reconditioned. All NEW parts and a valve job. I noticed that one of the valve spring keepers was not correctly seated so I decided to investigate further. I ended up removing multiple valve springs, retainers and keepers to find the same wear to all of the components. Please note that this cylinder head was never ran or even had rocker arms bolted on to it. To me this looks like used parts or possibly my old parts. Could this wear and or marks be caused by assembly of the valve springs?? Note that the wear seen to the keepers is also present as witness marks inside the retainers. All opinions are welcome

Also I measured the retainer OD at 1.500 and the valve spring OD at 1.560. Is this the correct retainer for the valve spring?

Retainers too or just keepers?

These are titanium, unfortunately they're not too cheap.

Thanks for taking the time to comment

If they look ok & the keepers fit properly, i'd run them.

I don't know how in depth you were with your machine shop prior to work being done, but for items like keepers, if you don't specify, its not uncommon for them to have a box of used, but good pieces they may pull from.

StealthWedge67,

I did ask and he agreed that new parts were going to be installed. My receipt also shows I paid for them

Thank for the input

If he paid for new stuff he shoulda got new stuff. Pic 2 looks like retainer damage from a damper. Had to be previously run to cause that.

The O.D. of the retainer is fine, it's the I.D. you need to check for both the spring (inner and outer) and the retainer.
I think you need to have a discussion with your builder as far as new vs. used.

Me thinks you got hosed by the shop Those are definitily not new parts You knew that BTW, if your springs have inner dampeners on the outer springs you may want to use tool steel retainers instead of the titainum ones or remove the dampeners I had one pump gas street customer that drove his car a lot have a inner dampener eat through his titainum retainers Luckily he found it before it caused any real damages to his motor
