after nearly a year and half i have finally gotten an ex coworker to get me to see his grandmothers 71 duster. he doesn't know much about it except it yellow and he thinks a 4 speed or 3 speed on the floor. i'm going over there tomorrow but i don't really know anything about what to look for (trouble areas) when it comes to A-bodies. i wouldn't know a 318 from a 340 for that matter. he thinks it has dual hood scoops. all he told me was she has had it from day one and has taken excellent care of it. what should i be looking for?

If you get the hood open take a pic of the fender tag . Its a little tag just behind the battery screwed on the inner splash pan with two phillips screws about 1 1/2 in x 3 in . theres a bunch of numbers and letters on it. get a pic and posted it on here and i'm sure somebody will tell you all you needs to know .

places to look for rust are everywhere. 340s came with 4 barrel carbs 318s came with 2 barrel. Might even say 340 on the air filter lid. look on the shifter knob and see what it shows,123R or 1234R? duel exaust or single ? was it hotroded or stock? just look around and you can figure out a lot about the car its not rocket science.

look on driver side of the block just above the oil pan, should have a casting date and will say 340 next to it. From what you are describing it sounds like a 340 car, but never hurts to check, in case someone swapped it out for a 318.

The fifth digit in the VIN on the dash will have a "G" for 318 and an "H" for 340, that is a good place to start!

And if it has scoops that actually came on it then its a 318 or slant 6 car and has the Twister option.

If I had to wait a day while thinking about it, I'd go bonkers. I get all excited when thinking about getting another car. I wonder if this is similar to how some women feel when they go shopping? Maybe is is a "Buyers Rush", but I really dig it.
It is correct, look for a G (318)or an H (340) in the VIN. 340 cars often got abused and blew up more often than 318 cars, so don't be surprised to see a 318 engine used as a replacement. I've seen that many times. One thing that is rarely changed it the rear axle. If this was a 340 car, it WILL have the 8 3/4" axle. 1970 cars also got front disc brakes standard, 1971 it was an option.
Be sure to report back and put up some pictures!

In addition 8.75 rears were not exclusive to 340 cars, many 318 cars and even some slant cars got them as well.

Well, I guess I should have been clearer. The slanty and 318 cars with the 8 3/4" are so equipped as part of a towing package. Not sure of the tag code for that though.
Dual exhaust is part of the 340 package, too.

truth be told, the ex co-worker sent me a message on monday and i haven't had a decent nights sleep since. a 71 duster is #2 on my list behind my 69 RR. and a 4 speed- what, WHAT!! thanks for the vin tips and i'm sure i'll figure it out (i'm not a newbie) but i was more concern with concelled issues EI: areas that typically go bad like rear windows on B-body, that type of thing. supposedly it's never seen a winter so i don't know. i'm kinda hoping it's not TOO nice as i'm not a numbers guy. not that i want to do anything but nicely street drive............

Okay, here is what I have noticed from parting out CALIFORNIA based a body cars:
*The spare tire well is often a collection point for water in any model, whether or not it had a vinyl top. The weatherstrip vendor must have been that absolute, LOWEST bidder on the planet, because at least 50% of the 67-76 A body cars I see have at least some peeling paint and rust scale forming.
* The drains in the lower quarter/trunk extensions clog easily, dirt/debris collects and traps water, you know what follows.
* Leaves like to collect in the cowl grate, then fall inside and block the drains.
*Leaves like to collect just above the lower section of the fenders where they bolt to the rocker panels.
*In some cases of cars driven hard,(Probably not an issue with a grandma driver) there may be some small cracks in the frame rails where the K members attach, as well as the upper control arm mounts.

Yeah, my experience has been mostly with A body cars. I don't recall there being any specific trouble areas.
Now if this were a 68-70 Charger with a vinyl top.......

Rusty Dusters I see most often get rust in the lower rear quarters, fender dog legs, rockers at the seem rearward of the doors, spare tire wheel well, front and rear floor pans under the carpet, and the inner fender hood hinge area.

I think stick shift 318's came with a 8 3/4.
And the most notorious place for rust I have noticed are the lower quarters for sure with dusters.

Never seen one with TB mount rusted out, but then again, out here in the nice dry west I rarely see any kind of frame rust.

thanks guys! i've exchanged a few messages with a guy named Dennis who also told me about these areas. i had also heard that the door striker area was common also along with the rear frame shackle area. i'm also a little confused with the whole large/small bolt pattern thing but don't think that's too big of a concern. i have to wait a few more hours before i can leave and it's just killing me! maybe 2 hours of sleep last night. it would be nice if this was a 340 car but i doubt it and it doesn't really matter that much as long as it's not a 6 but even then if the body is in great shape then it fine. a yellow duster to match my yellow road runner is pretty sweet!

GOOD LUCK!! Hope all goes great!!
Try not to 'overpick' the car,
If it is a 'grama car',it will show all those issues as quick as you can see it! Just remember all body issue are easily overcome , Title issues, complete frame wrecks can be very hard to overcome!

disappointing trip to say the least. rotted quarters, rotted rear bumber, somehow they had wiped off parts of the blacked out hood treatment. chevy black engine compartment, and per Jimmy-Bob a 216 six cylinder automatic(column)with of course the posi rear (7 1/4). lets see what else...... never seen a winter but they'll throw in the snow tires. front seat is destroyed but the back was very nice. the same black and white pattern that Scott likes. standard square instrument panel, completely wrecked dash pad (was repaired with matching black tape though). i could go on but you get the picture. i offered her $1000 (shark tooth grille was worth that) and she'll get back to me. she had several guys coming over to see it. sigh, 3 nights sleep over that!

Sorry for your dissapointment!!
Would not have been surprised over the blackout engine compartment,
Or the dash deal, or quarters,
The twisted package was not just a 340 option, and could have been on any duster then! Just as the sharktooth grille,!
I tend to look beyond what I know will be changed , and look for and at the stuff I should not have to change, frame rail dammage! Title work!
As 1/4s, fenders, doors, motor, trans, electrical, fuel, brake, wheels are all items that I know that I will get into when I buy one, so When I go look I all ready know how far , and how much money in the investment Am I willing to go .
You have to have a line at what point you are willing to throw the white flag , and decide to move to the next car / project.
Trust me there are far better cars out there than the one you have seen,, Just sad that this one was not the one, !!!!!

yeah, thats how i looked at it. the body is fixable but all the other stuff, cluster, auto, etc were what made me think twice. i simply don't have the money to sink into changing all the stuff that weren't what i wanted. i did like the seats though!

No, not true. The Twister package was a stand alone package that was not offered with a 340 engine. Like the 71 340 Duster, the 71 Twister came standard with a shark tooth grille, this grille was not available on its own on any other Duster, and unlike the 340 Duster, the Twister could be optioned with hood scoops as well as a special Twister only hood stripe design package.

I hated the idea of seeing it cut up and lost forever, so I have tried to sell it for over a month. Numerous ads on craigslist and its on ebay now.

Don't know if this will be a deal breaker or not, adding to all the other stuff that's been mentioned. But "A" bodies have a nasty habit of leaking water onto the fuse box area just above your left foot (subsequently your left foot is going to get wet too). Take a good look at the carpet under that area. I've heard of many ways to go about fixing this, but the one sure way is to just not take it out in the rain! Just something else to think about.
Good luck.

that would explain what looked like a moldy/whiteish stain in that area while the windshield area looked good. is that from the vent?

Some say it's from the vent area getting clogged up with leaves, pine needles, and the like. Others think it comes from the windshield wiper pivot shaves not sealing. Anyway, something to look for.
Here's some info:
