69 Charger fender to gas tank tube. Someone had painted mine black and I sanded it to prep for zinc plating when I noticed that it had something like a thin layer of lead on the outer surface. I guess that it helps to avoid sparks, anyone ever heard of this.

Thanks,
CAC

It is likely Terne Coating, or terne metal. It is a combination of lead and tin coating that was commonly used in fuel tanks and associated components. It is a hot dip application process and very corrosion resistant.

Terne metal, that's a new one for me, but makes sense. I was going to zinc plate the whole part but I'm not about to strip the terne coating which seems well intact despite my wire wheeling the paint off. Too bad the coating does not extend to the filler side that goes under the gas cap. Mine was rusted before I cleaned it up. I'll keep it natural and use the RPM protectant.

BTW, I'm a big fan of your 1st Gen. Big power with exhaust manifolds, I love it!

Previous post on topic. Wilson Productions does a great job on filler tubes.

Thanks for the post. I checked out his sight and his service of re tinning the part looks like the way to go.

I sent mine to Allen and he did a great job. He also did my door, trunk and hood latches also great work.
