I am looking for a good donor motor for a rod project. I have a chance to buy a 1988 ram truck motor and trans. I know it has roller lifters. But I don't know muck about the heads etc. on that motor Good choice or no?

Sorta: Not a powerhouse in stock form but a cam grind, headers and intake swap will wake it up. A 360 magnum is a lot more powerful if you can find one with usable heads. I think the 88 is a 3 speed non overdrive as well. Any 360 Magnum automatic will be an overdrive 4 speed automatic.

nothing wrong with the 88 motor if u want a nice dependable driver, the roller cam is just an added plus if you rebuild it and are worried about cam break in,, the trans is probably a low 1st gear 904 ,, usually called a 999 i have one in my 40 dodge good combination for a rod,,,

I bought a new 1988 3/4ton(my first new vehicle) and it ran great with just a little 318. My only complaint was it's top speed was only 87mph.. going down hill.

I miss that old truck

The Magnum and overdrive is superior. You can convert it to a carb easily or there is a fellow on Moparts that can set you up with a plug and play harness if necessary. If you get a donor vehicle it's pretty easy to make it run, really there are only a handful of wires that need hooking up and then figure the fuel delivery system out.
