I've heard the octane can vary by season and location

This the reason i like buying e-98 and adding the proper amount of gas to get a true e-85

I've heard the octane can vary by season and location. But in General 110 is a safe number to assume. It can be higher and lower depending!!

NOT SURE HERE: but seems that E-85 vs Gasoline is kind of like Aluminum vs Iron heads. You can run Higher compression and get away with it and in many cases NEED to do so. That said if you can run 13:1 with 110-gasoline you may be able to run 14:1 compression with E-85.

I do know several accounts of people running 10.5:1 to 11.5:1 compression and 14-16 psi boost on E-85. Far a HP or ET's ?????

I've been running 14.1:1 on E-85 but like any of
the compression things... its the cam that will
determine cranking pressure... also the E-85 is
105 octane... 110 is E-98.... yes it will vary with
season(winter is lower due to more gas in it) the
northern states will see E-70 vs some of the southern
states dont go that low

I have bought 2 drums and both checked 90% down here we don't have winter blend from what I have seen.

Does yours always test that high... around here I havent
seen more than 1% change on summer fuel

All of it I test around here is 84.7 or real close.

I have heard that with alcohol the hotter the motor is the better it will run. is this true for e85. and how hot do you guy run this stuff dose that ice cold air and fuel charge wick all the heat out of the aluminum head.

Just to clarify my E85 is NOT 105 octane comment.

The process to test octane requires that the air charge be controlled so that all of the fuel being tested is done at a standard. The problem is that the E85 takes so much heat out of the air charge, that the test method requires them to CRANK the air heater to be able to get to the test temperature. In real life use, gas and E85 run at the same outside air temperature on any given day. So adding heat to the E85 air charge doesn't really represent real world conditions.

That being said, when they add significant additional heat into the E85 aircharge during the test, of course it won't have the same detonation resistance then gasoline does.

So yes... it might "test" 105 octane under the methods prescribed, however if you do true apples to apples air charge temp test the E85 would have a MUCH higher octane number.

Turbo guys or not... we all benefit from lower air temps, and that's why you can effectively run more compression.

Would any of you guys run a 14:1 motor on 105 octane gas? Probably not...

My 505 C.I. low deck stroker with CNC ported Eddy RPM and a single plane Mopar M1 Dominator flanged intake made more HP with less torque using a Holley List # 9375 non HP 1050 CFM carb. using the local K&S 110 octane race gas, peak HP made was 681 and 682 HP was at 6200 and 6300 RPM on two different pulls, peak torque was 652 and 658 ft. lbs at 4800 and 4900 RPM on the same two pulls. The same motor using a Holley 1150 HP converted to E 85 ended up making a best (after many jet chnages) 676 HP at 6300 RPM and 666 Ft. Lbs at 4700 RPM This motor has 11.3 to 1 compression ratio with these heads, I was going to use a set of Indy 440-1 with smaller chambers to get 12.5 to 1 compression but those plans changed IHTH BTW, I've seen our local pump E85 vary from E75 to E90 from winter mix to letting some of the summer mix set in a plstic jug for a year in the dyno room The last twenty gallons I bought this summer all tested to be dead nuts at E85%

That seems to be true.. I was gonna up my launch temps
20* to see if it helped... but some I have talked to
said it would help... but it is a PITA to get it that warm
