Greetings All,

I just bought a cheapo Harbor Freight HVLP sprayer to try and paint the hood of my '68 Charger (rolling and / or spray bombs aren't coming out good). The rest of the car is OK, just the hood is crappy.

Couple questions:

1) Instructions say 40 PSI. Do I set the regulator on my compressor for 40 PSI when the sprayer is operating? or at 40 PSI when not "under load"?

2) How much overspray can I expect? Since I'm just spraying the hood, should I still tarp off everything in my garage that I don't want overspray on? Or will it not be that bad?

3) Will a fan in the garage help with overspray or will that just make it go everywhere?

4) Should I wear a full-out respirator or is just a mask good enough?

Thanks.

(My apologies for posting something that's not related to a Chrysler merger, economic doom and gloom, penguins, or that "Flo" chick from the TV commercial).

Do you have a regulator at the gun? I do, and set mine at 20-25.

It will still go everywhere, cover up all that you can. I could talk about this until my fingers cramped.

If the fan is moving air to your hood, you will get more dirt in the paint. I usually open the garage door a little, and point a fan out in an exhaust manner.

I buy those disposable 3m masks. Hope it helps.

wear a respirator that AT MINIMUM has charcoal filters on it. A dustmask simply filters out the large particles, it does not stop or filter the fumes at all, which are the most harmful part. That's one thing you should not skimp on.

At the gun inlet with the trigger pulled wide open, full flow. you'll have pressure loss the longer the line is from the source. You can make an inexpensive cheater gauge and adjust the wall regulator to 40psi at the inlet.

2) How much overspray can I expect? Since I'm just spraying the hood, should I still tarp off everything in my garage that I don't want overspray on? Or will it not be that bad?

You'll get some, not as much as a pressure pot style gun. If you don't want overspray on stuff, tarp it. Think about the dry dust a can of spray paint gets everywhere.

3) Will a fan in the garage help with overspray or will that just make it go everywhere?

Depends, You do want some venting otherwise the air has nowhere to go and the suspended paint will travel with the air.

4) Should I wear a full-out respirator or is just a mask good enough?

at a minimum wear a respirator, isosyanates are a nasty compound. You may not be real sensitive to the stuff, others are very sensitive. The stuff can kill you. I wear a full respirator hood with fresh auxilliary air pressure

Thanks.

Cheapo $20 - gun, no regulator at the gun itself.

If I set the regulator at the compressor to 40psi, it drops to like 25 when the gun is in use. If I set it to 60psi, it drops to 40 when the gun is in use. I just wasn't sure which was right.

Whoops - I think someone answered that while I was typing this.

I bought a cheap reg/guage set-up that was designed to attach to the gun from HF.

Overspray wasn't too bad but you still want to plastic anything you don't want covered with overspray. Set up a piece of wood or plastic to test the spray pattern first before you go at your hood.

Tom

I bought a disposable charcoal mask/filter set-up for 20 bucks, the paint guy sold it to me.

The over spray will still be bad but less than a pot gun. it will spray in almost any direction. cover any thing put a fan at the door 1/4-1/3 open to suck it out. make sure what is outside neibors cars ect are far-far away or they will get spray on them.
Here is a shot of my sharppe platnum gun
Laying on ya back on the ground it worked well and we tolk turns with the gun.

Maybe next time you can post something more important
You never posted what type of paint you are shooting. Single Stage do as Dave says above!
Base/Clear 3 or so light coats it will be dry like shooting a laqure It goes on shiney but dries to a even dry look! The base is just to make the "color" Then the clear as stated above. Any runs can be sanded out of the clear later. So Base/Clear is easy to shoot since you can put on dry color and clear that can be fixed if messed up.To me it is way easyer to shoot Base clear with Metalics than single stage.

The recommended pressure is where they certify the gun to be hvlp. You may need more or less at the gun trigger pulled to atomize the paint. Basically if you hold the gun about 12" away from a test piece and fully pull the trigger for a about a sec. you should get a cigar shaped pattern with full coverage in the middle and the smallest drop size you can get on the edges. I found a great post about setting up a hvlp gun on hotrodders.com
