Any ideas what would be a good way to upgrade this old system? Not having any problems but I don't think it is a very strong charging system in these old cars. Even when I hit the brakes I can hear the fuel pump change pitch dramatically and, I won't even get into the turn signal effect on the fuel pump Just thinking there must be an easy upgrade......or is it that simple?? Don.

I had the same problem with my challenger.
I got a later model high amp out of a pick-up late 70"s i think.
I brought a reman version using the late truck appication. found a 80 amp and installed i also installed a volt meter.
At idle i found that iwas dropping to around 12.8-13.2 volts.
My idle speed was aroudn 700-750 rpms
Well my alternator went bad and i went to a local rebulder was charged $125 for the rebuild ever since at idle i now charge at 14.-14.5 at the same idle speed.
i have an aftermarket cd deck installed along with digital guages, even at night with my headlights on my voltage doesn't drop.
I befroe the rebuild at stops at night i could see the lights dim i step on the break he volts would go lower and lower.
i think the problem lies in old worn parts and carppy rebuilds cheap units sold at the local parts store.

I Add a 2nd output lead (8 gauge) from the alternator output stud to the starter relay stud or battery. Doug
that'd be the simplist/fastest way plus cleaning all connections might be enough of an upgrade to take care of you.
So.......... ...........After reading some of the links to older posts and seeing the diagrams posted by Nacho, it would seem that running a wire from the batt(start Relay post) to the Amm, and another from the Alt post to the Charge side of the Amm (both new wires through a separate grommet in the firewall) would take ALOT of load and potential heat away from the bulkhead connector. Am I right on this? Would this setup be easily converted to a Voltmeter setup later if I decide to change my gauges?
AND....... I have my fuel pump power comming from the start relay post to an oil pressure switch on back of engine, then straight to the pump from there. Not a good idea?

running the 2 wires in thru 2 grommets takes the load off of the problem bulkhead as Nacho says & keeps the ammeter functional. running a jumper from the alt to the starter relay is easier & renders the ammeter inaccurate & a voltmeter should be added. there's obviously more to this than the above & I am just getting started on this myself. feeding the gauge off the starter relay batt stud is OK if you have it fused .
