I just don't see this topic brought up enough or talked about alot. Maybe just not to many people have good running small blocks. I would like to see your stock stroke 340 combo. If not stock stroke a very basic stroker. Would like to even see a very basic simple stock stroke 340 combo running 10's if anyone had one they would like
to share!?!? Besides the engine combo if anyone would like to share about the car itself and all the tricked out parts you might be using in the suspension
or transmission/converter. Lite weight 904 trans with aluminum parts and low gear sets with roller sprags. Just curious and would love to hear any info for a guy like me who just can't simply afford what alot of people are doing! Thanks Brock

Not all that hard to do, really: back in the mid-70s my Duster (the Ed Hamburger car) was the first SS/IA car in the 10s and had the NHRA record for a while.
Mid-late '90s with a 358" 340, iron W2s, Crane flat tappet, basic 904, 5.38 gear & 13x31 tire, modified SS springs, I was running 10.50s in decent air.
Now 368" R1 block, Batten W2s, Comp roller, 6000 stall, otherwise pretty much the same, low 10s @ 3500' DA with an 850 Holley and no real tuning, through race bullet mufflers.
By today's standards, nothing really trick: Jack Arnew control arms and a couple of old SS tricks is all. Did have to add wheelie bars after a 300' ride on the rear bumper, though.

Vic's S/ST3040 stock stroke 340, 10.28 to 1,factory cast iron heads that he ported on pump gas. This was the first 9 sec. pass he made, eventually I think it went 9.78 in better air. 904 with a 6250 convertor, 557 gear and a 31" tire.

I was running 10.1s with the engine thats going into
my Rampage now... was in the race car as my back up
engine... its a 10.6:1 with iron W-2s home ported..
.640/.640 roller, home made headers... back then it
was a stock stroke with 4.88 gears and 31" tire... now
its a 3.79 stroke and runs 9.50s in the same car

One of the better running combo's I have seen was a stock stroke 360.
3200 pound 71 cuda, 727 trans, 8 inch convertor, stock eddies, 525/305 comp hydraulic cam, race demon, about 12 to 1 compression with 1 7/8 headers.
ran 10.90's at 121/122 or so, thought that was impressive at that weight with unported heads and a hydraulic camshaft.

69 Dart GTS A4 Silver All steel, flat factory hood, 3360race weight
418 BPE factory replacement headed stroker, 565 lift solid cam
Best so far, 10.40 @127 1/4
1.41 best 60 foot
6.60 at 103.90 1/8

I have a stock stroke .030 360 in my car, and have gone 10.56. It's nothing special, kb 107s, .525 solid cam, mild ported eddys, m1 intake and 850 alcohol QF carb. It has a 9" J converter, 727 w/transbrake, and 4.30 rear gear with 29" tires.

From what I've learned w/ my 340;

Torque is the name of the game and a stock stroke 340 doesn't make much down low, so you have to spin it, and of course to spin it you need spring pressure and a cam that works in that rpm range( Im gonna say upwards of 8000 rpm)

If I had to use a stock stroke in a 340 to run 10sec., I'd use a solid roller cam, but still consider a solid flat tappet. Cam timing is everything.

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

There is a guy at the local track who had one. 10.70 car

Stock stroke 340, 12-13:1 Ported W2's, big solid roller .700+ lift with 1.6's, 727, 5.13 gears and 29.5" tall slick.

He built a 418 short block for it, changed the gear ratio and the car goes 10.teens now.

I honestly don't remember, it seems like it was 26 something, but I can't say for sure. For what it's worth the car ran the following year with less comp. (9 something to 1) and 1.88 valve stock heads and went 9.83 in the first 5 passes. He hasn't had it out since.

Sounds like a strong runner. What cam is it? Any head flow specs?

Thats my opinion.. to run 8.80s in the 1/4 with a
4.88 gear its gonna have to turn well above what a
hyd roller will go to.... JMO
