I have been battling an issue with my 67 coronet.. 440/727 ... Had Redline gauges change the amp gauge to a voltmeter..
Everything worked great for a couple of years then the gauge started to read high ( top of scale) after running for a while. Changed out voltage regulator twice and continues to do the same thing.. Gauge seems to work more like an amp gauge vs a voltmeter. Entire system was/is new..Voltage at battery while running 13.8 or so. Headlights act funny when turned on now ( hesitate to light) and when switching to high beams...
I am beginning to think the alternator ( stock and upgraded to a 55 amp when rebuilt)( at least that is what the rebuilder told me)..

Thinking of removing the alternator and taking it to a shop to have checked out?? Any thoughts or help here...

Check the key on voltage at the regulator in wire from key on.

sometimes the bulk head connector is bad.

I had that problem last year and it was a poor connection at the regulator thus it was showing low voltage at the regulator so it kept telling the alternator to charge full. Would boil the battery.

sounds like you may have bad connections at the bulkhead to the lights too.

Oh grounds grounds grounds make sure motor is grounded to battery and at least two body places. (I like three grounds off the motor 1 to battery and 2 to body! Battery needs a ground - to body also.

Headlight system has a ground too make sure it is good!

Total restoration on car ( rotisserie) New wiring harnesses etc. Good point though on the connections.. Maybe they got dirty in 3 years.

I don't mean to rattle the ammeter vs. voltage guage thing but, ( ) if you had an ammeter it could help in determining what the voltage is doing. Before I get flamed, I do prefer an ammeter over a voltmeter, but being an electrician I really would prefer both.

I agree and 13.8V is NOT high. I would rhink your gauge is wrong if it's reading high and a real multimeter shows 13.8V.

They say there are no such thing as a stupid question.
They say there is always the exception that proves the rule.
Don't be the exception.

First, alternators only put out what the regulator tells it to.
Second, 13.8 is proper for a charging battery.
Third, I would believe a multimeter over any after market voltage indicator. If you have two or can borrow another multimeter, compare them. They should be equal or within 2 tenths of a volt of each other.
