Some may recall my post a while back about the mufflers for my '64 that runs a healthy BB, headers & 3" X-pipe system with turn-downs at the rear axle. Tacked on some Race Bullets, but as crisp and nasty as they sounded (a +), with the rest of the system just tack-welded together (= gaps), it was LOUD.
So, based on a 2.5" system in my other car (with tailpipes, = flawed comparison) I had my muffler guy weld on a pair of 3" Dynomax Super Turbos. One flaw in a comparison is that he welded the pipe gaps last. BUT. Now the car has a ridiculous loud drone like a hum at idle - even outside the car - up to about 2500. Horrible: no crispness, only a loud low-frequency "moan". I've had a few cars without tailpipes and never this, but of course I can't recall their mufflers except 2 had glasspacks (1970s) and smaller tubing.
So: any suggestions/sound clips for some crisp-sounding mufflers for this thing that will still flow?

When I put the full 3" system on my car with tail pipes out to the rear bumber it stopped any drone I had. Ron

Yes, it has an X-pipe (see 1st sentence). Tough to package 3" tailpipes on an early-B wagon, but what I don't "get" is how bad & dull the SuperTurbos sound on this car. Never had a drone like that at idle before, especially outside the car. I don't think tailpipes would actually improve the sound.
I'm trying to avoid buying several sets of mufflers, so I guess I'll just put the Bullets back on, sell off the STs, and figure out how to package some 3" tailpipes. The wagons are different underneath than the sedans.

Try a pair of Stainless Works Chambered tubes from SummitRacing or Jegs,... straight thru design, with a louvered inner tube, no glass/packings, you want some backpressure, install them in reverse flow, I run them with a H pipe and cast HP manifolds....nice sound/idle no drone, but when you get on it, everyone knows!

FYI they are available in many sizes/length, I'd recommend the longest length that you can squeeze under the car, I run 36"X 2.5" right after the H pipe

these mufflers are the ONLY muffler I run, but I buy mine from a Moparts Member who makes each one to order right here in the US.
