It would depend on the length and the RPM you turn it but moly would most likely be over kill... I dont make the torque that the BB make and the lengths of mine are fairly short.. one is 37" the other is 40" and both are DOM 3.5"... I'm sure that Dynotech will say DOM is fine for you... but I would let them suggest what is needed

Had an interesting conversation with an engineer at work yesterday about driveshafts. I told him I plan to upgrade the driveshaft in the Dart Sport over the winter to a 3.5" moly from Dynotech. He claims that would be overkill and that a dom 3.5" would be well suited for my power level. Engine makes nearly 850 horse and 775 ft. lb. torque and the car weighs about 3400 pounds. What is your guys take on driveshafts? Steel, Moly, Aluminum? Diameter, thickness? Lots of options and I'm sure even more opinions.....

960Was said engineer shooting from the hip or did he ask pertinent questions, like, how long is your drive shaft, what is its expected max rpm, what level will it be balanced to, etc? just asking
And current engineers are trained to incorporate "just enough" into the design to get the job done, which is fine, until they are in the car
Reality check, that half the population is smarter then 50% of the people and it's a constantly contested fact.

As already stated the parameters for the driveshaft are length and driveshaft RPM. HP an weight are non factors essentially. You want a material that will not exceed critical speed for the material used at a given length and RPM. For instance my Super Street car has a fairly short driveshaft with driveshaft speeds under 8000rpm and it is DOM, the Hot street car has a fairly long driveshaft and sees 9200+ in driveshaft speed so it is a Carbon Shaft.

One area where overkill is a good thing! This little mishap cost me about 9 months of downtime and 1500$ to fix.
