Hey guys I'm parting a 70's model 4x4 Dodge truck and it has the NP445 in it, not the granny low NP435. Is this thing worth anything?

Worth more than the np435. A lot of guys like the fact its not cranny first. You can probably get $300-500 if not more. Post it on Ramchargercentral.

Is this just another truck style four speed or is a five speed? Just what kind of tranny is it?

It's a heavy truck trans similiar to a 435 however it has a synchro first and close ratios. I like them much more than the 435.

4spd. I believe its same as granny just not a granny first gear.
Besides and manual trans for a truck is always worth something

Might throw it up on craigslist too, there's a few truck pullers who run the 445. If you were closer I would be interested in it.

Me too!
It is a heck of a lot better for towing and general driving. The gear splits are much better than most of the 435s, it's synchro in all four gears, Not better for rock crawling but for everything else it's a keeper.

Thanks guys, guess I'll hold onto it instead of scrapping it lol. I truck pull myself and running the ratios it has, makes it wayy too fast. 4.56 1st, 2.28 2nd. Even with 5.13's it's still in the 22-1 range. With the 4.10's the truck has it's at 18-1 in low range.

It's Third gear that really has me excited. Running a 318 over the mountains, I have to really let the truck slow down before putting it into Third, with my 1.7 or so ratio. The 445 has more like a 1.3 Third ratio, which would get my engine back into its max torque range without revving to the moon for miles at a time.

How can you tell them apart as far as the 435 and the 445?

Data tag on the pto cover or in my case, DRIVING it. For me, 1st and reverse are WAY too fast. 4.56 1st, 5.64 reverse compared to 6.68 and 8.26.

Case is about a 1" longer on the 445 and usually has a straight shifting lever that has no bend in it after the bend coming out of the top

We were looking at one as a possibility with an axle gear change and stayed with the 435, but there are some guys running them infront of profab t-cases with a huge selection of gears.

Like Mpetros said, the case is longer on the 445, but there is also a close ratio 435 out there. It's kind of rare from what I've heard, but I picked one up a year ago. I believe it's tagged as a 435A and I think it's the same ratio as the 445

Just for reference I swapped the MP435 for a NP445 in my 73 W200 last year. I paid $300 for the tranny in very good working condition.

And as said above, the NP445 is a great improvement to driveability to the truck.

There ARE close ratio NP435s, but they are rare.

On to the NP445 or its twin, the NP4530. Nearly every one I've seen for sale is from a 4x4. Does anyone have a clue on tailshafts/housings for 2wd?

Thanks,
R.

Dogdays,

Hate to run the post off topic so feel free to pm me or start a new one, but what are you interested in knowing about the 445 tailshaft? I've got a 85 or so one ton crew cab 2 wheel drive with a 445 in it. The truck is a few hours away but I can crawl under there the next time I'm home. Also have a close ratio 435 that was behind a big block in a mid 70's W200. I think the guy I got it from said the motor wasn't original so who knows about the origins of the tranny.

Man, I'd appreciate pictures of the tailshaft area. I want to know or guess if an NP435 tailshaft housing will work.

Im on vacation this week but I'll get some pics possibly next weekend. I've got the 445 in the truck, close ratio 435 out of the truck, short tailshaft 435s from the hydraulic clutch setups and a standard 435 in a truck
