should be able to just get some 1/2" black pipe from the hardware store.....

Std black pipe will be fine as long as you keep the bolt's tight and don't allow them to loosen and rattle around and eat themselves up, Heck Ford used aluminum for their spacer's.

Any machine shops near you? They might have some heavy wall tubing. 3/8" ID X 5/8" OD would give you a 1/8" wall. Wouldn't need to be tool steel. As mentioned above, as long as it's tight you'll be fine
