Think I would see a difference going with this Aluminum radiator?

That's the Bouchillon fan I was thinking of. I haven't used it but it looks like it would move a lot more air than the one you have and they swear by it.

A high capacity aluminum radiator could help. So could a high flow water pump and high flow thermostat to go with it. I've got a 26" radiator of similar design from Mancini. It works great even with the little 5 blade MP fan.

I noticed the radiator advertised is for a /6. Was your's originally a /6 with 22" radiator? Not sure if it makes any difference but a 440 can work OK with a really good 22" radiator - but 26" is better.

Since you have a recently re-cored radiator and symptoms suggest low airflow, it may be worth trying the better fan + clutch first as the simplest and cheapest fix and go from there.

so adding a clutch would help?

A good heavy duty thermal fan clutch seems to work best. I assumed that's what's in the Hayden box in the pic. but maybe not?

going down the road it sits just to the left of the middle between C and H. If i exit and idle at the light for a minute or two it creeps over and touches the H , then I start scrambling to get moving and it cools down once I get moving.

If you have a fan clutch it is time to replace it. It's not working anymore.

Note if you have a 4 core the new replacement units are too tall (will hit the radiator) to put in. Use a Hayden 3665 or a 2765. I think it was $39

Sounds like a bad fan clutch to me.

What is the condition of your a/c condensor? Check the front of it for blockage and causes of low flow. Is this problem occuring with the a/c on? What happens when the a/c is off?

You do not have a fan clutch so a bad fan clutch is not your problem. but is does appear you have a flow problem of some type.

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

If thats a eight blade water pump, replace with a six.The six blade a/c pump circulates water slower and keeps it in the radiator longer for better cooling.

My bad - that was somebody elses post. Adding a clutch where there's none now won't help cooling. It would just save a few ponies while running down the road.

How much use on the bottom end?(miles years)
How old is the rad.
I had a real over heating problem with my big block, and found the cure was in cleaning out the frost plugs and power washing the coolant passages and re coring the rad.
I thought I had re cored the rad the summer before but when my friend and Mechanic took it to his rad guy they told me that my rad had just been cleaned and painted.( it was full of stop leak all thru the engine from the old guy before me trying to stop the heater core from leaking)
Find I guy you can trust.
Thats the hardest part of all we do.

I agree with this guy.

If you haven't had that block chemically hot tanked, and the block is older than dirt, you are likely to find "mung" of the years clogging up the coolant passages and the radiator. Hard to describe, but think of jellied chemicals throughout that mill's water jackets. A viscous, crummy goop is the best description.

Seen it, done that, etc.

Think simple 1st...
do you have a good radiator..at least a 4 core, clean and flushed. ( I have one .stock)
A flex fan works fine.
Do you have the correct pulleys.? I use a single large pulley w/ a single hemi crank pulley,( about 1/2 space between them)(stock)
Wtare pump..do you have an a/c pump or standard..get an A/C pump if you dont.it has and extra fin i believe.(stock from NAPA)
thermostate...190*.?? NAPA again

I have a mild /hot built 440 AND will run 50 mileS fine in 100 degree temps..at a stop sign still runs finE...never tops 190* (After market guage w. bulb)

NOW when i floor it...i will feel a heat wave like an oven got turned on in the interior. because of the headers..!!!...lol

no clutch fan..(after market flex fan)
the fan is proper distance from the radiator.
And the lower 1/2 of my shroud has been removed.

one thing i havent heard mentioned is .. you sure your timing is right for your set-up?

or (has to do w/ timing).comp ratio..

First and foremost - get a real gauge on it. I also thought my son's 400 in his '73 RR was running hot. The factory gauge would get up to the line just before H and stay there all day long...but the radiator never puked coolant. I did two things -- put an Autometer Sport Comp mechanical gauge in and bought a hand-held infra red thermometer -- both told the same story. The temp wasn't getting above 180*. Don't rely on your factory gauge...

Ahall, can I ask why you are so intent on throwing money at something like this? The only thing you need to pay for is a way to get an accurate temp reading.

If in fact you find that it REALLY is too hot, then find out why. Sometimes something as simple as changing your initial timing and/or idle mix will correct it, and costs nothing.

More than likely, it's your 30+ year old gauges and wiring. One thing to note on factory gauges, if the needle remains in the range indicated, regardless of the position in that range, you are fine...
