I painted the door jams and trunk yesterday. And it is NOT the same color as under the hood. The previous owner repainted under the engine compartment before I bought the car. Now, I am wondering whos tint is off...his or mine?
Check out these pics I took today and tell me if this is Y8 Gold Leaf. The engine bay has a slight browner tint and is just a tad darker. But I like the color on the jams, it smacks you in the face in the sun........
But, I do want to know.....is this right?
( I know computer monitors don't show correct color, but maybe it'll be get close)

When I repainted my GY8 71 GTX, the color was lighter and the metalic was softer than the original paint. I think gold is the toughest to match.

It would be best, if you want a full match, to find someone who has an electronic "color eye".

You may want to find out what brand pain he used. Humidity, temp, etc, all play a huge part on painting....especially metallics like your shooting.

Barry post some of the engine compartment. I had the exact thing happen to me the jambs do appear to be correct. Different brands seem to be a shade different. DuPont was darker than the Matrix that I ended up using. Here is a snap shot of mine.

Great looking RoadRunner there T.
We're close enough we need to get our Plymouths together when I get done. Is there much Mopar stuff that goes on down your way?

Not a lot once a year at Mooresville Dragway and Farmington Dragway. You have probably more up your way in Marion. Mountain Gateway Mopar Association. I would have liked to made Morgonton car show this weekend I think it's this weekend but I have other plans. If you need any help with anything let me know and I'll try to help.

GY8 will tend to be a bit transparent. Like a candy color. It may take 3-4 coats to get bring the color up!
This original paint Charger was repainted at the factory. probobly for the same reason.

Here is the long answer. Both could be correct. Depending on plant, enviroment and spray equipment colors varied. Even today there is a great deal of variation on color. Look at all the variants for GM's 382E Pewter! When spraying the color you go over, number of coats, type of gun, fluid nozzle on gun, distance, air pressure, reduction ratio, reducer selection, type of paint (laquer, enamel, urethane, basecoat clearcoat or single stage)and paint manufacturer can all vary a color. If thats not enough golds and pewters can be the most difficult. A spectraphotometer (color camera) can help but it can still get weird. So to get started get some paint and do a spray out. ALWAYS START WITH A SPRAYOUT. and verify it to the car near the area you will be painting. If it doesn"t match take in a polished and flat part of the car at least 3"x3" and have a reading done then do another spray out. Some distributors even offer to tint colors for a fee. If you want what was "correct" for that car you should match it to an unmolested area and check around the car in case of repaint. Also make sure if the paint has sat that it gets shaken thoroughly as pigments settle.

Live to paint, paint to live!
