That looks like one of those plugs that melts if you overheat the motor and therefore void the warranty. Wreckers put them on motors and I imagine engine rebuilders would too. By removing it you've voided any warranty you would have had.

this is different then those.we use to put them(the melt away style) in some of the dirt motors at the shop i use to work at.this actually has a nut u tighten to hold it in the block.

Ah I heard of those but I'd never actually seen one. The inside section must be an incomplete torus (donut shape) that can expand outward as you tighten it. That's pretty neat. But it's also not terribly hard to get a regular plug in using a socket and extension to tap it in evenly...

What exactly would this be used for?

Those are replacement plugs.Used them at the shop where it was $$$$ to replace a standard soft plug. They go in the hole and there is a nut that tightens and expands it.I used a lot on the old junkers we used to get at work. They actually work very well and last.I installed one that I know was in for at least 5 years and no problems. They came out after the rubber type.Rocky

Yep, it's an expanding freeze plug. Does work nicely when the bore in the block is cleaned up nicely. But, even then I wouldn't consider it a permanent repair myself.

You guys must not work on cheap peoples cars. Here they want it fixed at the least amount of $$$$.After 30 years in a shop I can tell you Ive seen it all.tell a customer its say 500 bucks of 75 and they will always take the 75.Even the people with $$$$ want cheap.Had a guy with a brand new Caddy in for an oil change. When we told him it was 7 qts he said just put in 5 and Ill drive it like that. Then we told him it said Mobil 1 only and his reply.Just put in the cheapest oil you have.Needless to say we showed him the door.A $60K car with 5000 miles on it.No way was I doing that.Rocky
