My Jeep seems to have a problem in 2nd Gear, its like it doesn't want to kick in, the engine revs up and eventually it grabs hold and goes. Seems to do worse in the cold than when it was warm (does a little better when I let it warm up a little longer than normal). Is this a serious problem $$$, or easy fix (maybe fluid issue?)?

Band adjustment , but if this has been going on for sometime it may be glazed and require replacement .

We stopped driving it shortly after the problem started. It doesn't do it all the time. I took it in today and they wanted $1700 to rebuild the whole trans, does this sound reasonable or do I need a second opinion.

If the 2000 Grand Cherokee in you signature line is the subject, it could have one of three different transmissions depending on the engine.

Two of them have an external front band adjustment that could solve the problem. If it has a 4.0L or 5.2L engine the 42RE and 44RE adjustment shown on the link below can be performed.

If it's a 4.7L there is no adjustment.

It's a 4.0 (I don't believe either of the others have external bands but not sure). I really think the kickdown band is the issue, I'll have to check with some other places this place is obviously trying to hose me.

Thanks to you both!!

Also check your throttle pressure cable from the t-body down to the trans it may have came off.

Why not adjust the band yourself? Follow the directions in the link I provided.
