so what your saying is that if im getting hot driving down the highway its not the fan at ALL?
Is it a clutch fan now ???I had the clutch go bad on a fan a few summers ago and the fan freewheeled and created enough of a blockage to have the temp creep up on me cruizing down the highway...If it's a clutch fan reach in there and give it a spin...If it spins freely you've found your problem....

get a stock thermo clutch fan from napa or parts store of your choice I bumped my 5 blade fan up to a 7 blade fan from a mid 80s AMC Hornet make sure you got the right size pully on the water pump also in my case I removed the A/C and cond.from the truck got a new clutch, added the 7 blade fan, replaced the rad with a 3 core max cooling replacement put a non A/C water pump pully and a wp with 8 vanes on the pump the larger pully turns slow at idle so the 8 vane wp moves more water at idle an A/C pully is smaller and turns faster at idle so the 6 vane wp will move more water at idle with a sm wp pully and 8 vane pump you "could have cavatation at the water pump and cause damage" at high rpms a good high flow thermo "robert shaw" type is a good help in controling flow and temps and a good rad cap is something most need the carb and timming can heat it up at cruz speeds also,so check you tune also

The fan will aid your cooling whether you are going 20 mph or 80. When the fan is engaged, it pulls the air through the radiator. What would otherwise would be turbulent airflow, building up in front of the grill, gets a path through the radiator because the fan pulls it through. If you have ever done much towing, you would have noticed the difference. In hot summers pulling my car on the trailer at 65 mph, especially on grades, you will see the temp creeping up, when the clutch engages, you can hear it and watch the temp come down in minutes. While most cars cruising with no load will get enough air through the radiator for normal cooling with a malfunctioning or inefficient fan, our muscle cars need all the help they can get and directed flow is an important part of that.

the one i have currently doesnt make that ROAR like the real good ones.
The ones that ROAR cost big-time horsepower to drive and are also RUFF on water-pump bushings/bearing and drive-belts.
If you are having low-speed low-rpm cooling probs ...you want a powerful electric puller fan. These operate at full-speed down-low where you need it.
PLUS ... there will be a definate mpg savings over ones that ROAR.

I used a core BB engine from a '78 Cordoba with a very aggressive 7 blade clutch fan. I'd look for one like it if that's what you need.
I agree with the post above - from experience. The big fan will help with cooling problems when stopped or moving slowly. If your engine won't cool off pretty fast at speeds above 35 MPH you've got other problems a big fan won't solve.
If a good cooling system starts running hot at speed it almost always means the radiator is getting plugged.
If you're starting from scratch with a new system, it may be an older plugged radiator or too small radiator causing the problem or something else... what are the symptoms?
here is the symptoms. while running 55 on long hills towing a trailer temps rise slowely but shurly to 210. the fan clutch defently kicks on in traffic and brings temps down but on the highway doesnt seem to even come on. whats up with that. how do i fix it. brand new thermal hd clutch

OK - '78 Cordoba BB is my vote for a doner. Its a big "cupped" 7 blade a little under 20". I'd send you one but the postage is probably more than what it would take to get one from a wrecking yard close by you.
did all of these cars have the same fan. if its just laying around and not to much trouble any way to get some meshurements. my shroud is exactly 20.5 inches. thanks

does the one on there have the thermo spring on the front of it? most likly some one done swaped a diff modle clutch and fan on it to get the 7 blades could be your prob if it not a thermo clutch as far as locking up at speed and roaring non thermo just wont do it I would just replace the thermo clutch with a new one from napa, mine was 65$ and you can hear it when the temps creep up,idle or speed the right shroud is important also, the blade needs to stick 3/4 of there width into the shroud
