Approximate of course. Am wanting to keep the smallblock route, and am curious how much they will hold up to reliably....thanks in advance.

Most will agree that 550-600 or so is about it, and even at 600 you will be running in the riskier zone when dependability is the concern. That said quite a few guys have engines running 650-700 with no reported problems. A lot will depend on how good the block is that you start with, and how well it's machined and put together.

Welcome to the board.

If you search around the race section you will see it has been discussed a little.

In a nut shell, photos were asked to be produced of an actual block failure for LA series engines and none came up. Some of those guys are pushing 700 and a bit beyond without going "R" block.

cool, thanks....that's probably about right at the limit of what I'm wanting to do. Like I said, with the car, Im wanting to build a street legal drag car, to drive around town once in a while....Ever since I was a kid, I had always been infatuated with the KOS cars, especially the few small block ones. Not wanting to go quite that serious, but you get the point. Hell, I don';t know, I may end up realizing that I want to build something a little milder to enjoy on the streets a little more. Thanks for the input, it's much appreciated.

Thanks, I've lurked around the forums for a bit, wanting to get another old Mopar, and this one kinda fell into my la[p...1970 swinger 340/727 car, 3.91 suregrip, manual discs, top banana, go wing, rallyes, runs and drives for CHEAP. I do have a 2012 Liberty, but I don't think that counts for a classic mope.......
Seems like for the most part, everyone around here is pretty friendly, and willing to help.

As far as the block goes, I didn't really wanna go the srious R block route....Was wanting to see what was possible with a stock block and a top quality bottom end. Thanks brother.

You're welcome. The Liberty does count for keeping it real though.

Even if you don't hit the big hp numbers, that Swinger will make up for it in light weight.

i dont know how street-able the 500+ HP small blocks are. RB would be the way to go to get that kind of power and be a little more mild mannered.

are you looking to do this naturally aspirated? i looked into building a small block and after thinking it out went RB instead. parts and labor are basically the same, and my thinking was to have a motor that was not "maxed out" so i could have room to upgrade in the future if i wanted to.

I can tell you that a 500HP (or higher) small block can be built to be very streetable and run on pump gas, it's all about the build combo. For starters use a stroker crank, they make street driving a big HP SB just as nice as a similarly built big block.

Yeah I definately wanna keep it a smallblock......been keeping uo the last several years with thw advancements in heads and stroker kits.......seems like back in the 90's all you had was w2's for the most part(or thats about all you would see anyways )......

Will have a lot of questions to ask on the race forum I'm sure as it seems like there are lalot of knowledgeable guys with fast smallblocks on here. Can't wait to pick this car up, and who knows I may realize I don't wanna go that serious and might enjoy cruiaing it a bit more.....we'll see.thanks fir the info brother.....

If it is a real "H" code car, I would be careful as to what mods you do to it. They are fairly rare.

Whatta car! They ruled the streets where I grew up, wasting those 396 chevelles and goats and anything with the blue oval.
My eyes are almost turning green.....
