I have about 100 miles on a new 470 rebuild with Brad Penn break in oil. Is it safe to say the rings should be broke in enough to start using the regular Brad Penn oil? Or should I go a few more miles with the break in oil? This is a hydraulic roller cam setup. Thanks

Hello Tim, If this was the oil it was fired up with I'd change it ASAP & would have right after the 30 minute break in was done. If not & this is the 2nd batch I'd leave it in & here's some good (related) reading for you. "breakin secrets" at www.mototuneusa.com. VG info on ring breakin

Brad Penn break in oil shouldn't be syntethic ,

how was that 100 miles put on , 1/4 at a time ? if not your rings are not fully seated yet .

Some ring makers say 5k before changing to synthetic, so I have been told .

The 100 miles was with a couple of changes of the non synthetic Brad Penn break in oil. The 100 miles was pretty mild on the motor with a few stop light romps. I was just curious when I could start using the regular synthetic Brad Penn oil. Hi Rob, I didn't do a 30 minute break in due to it having a roller cam setup. Thanks

The "regular" Penn oil is semi-syn, not a full syn....

As to your answer..if you call ring mfgs, engine builders, etc you will get answers all over the place.

Ive decided that 500 miles, especially if you make a few hard passes, is plenty.

Ok thanks, thats what I'm finding. Everyone has a different opinion. Not really a set in stone answer.

Has the oil consumption stabilized?
