About to buy a can for my 340.

Motor is .30 over
Ported J-heads
Holley Strip Dom w/750
904 with 4500 conv
5.00 + gears

All going in a 3100 or so back halfed Dart. This motor is just filling the void until our hemi is done. Have my choices narrowed down to two.

MP 296 .557 cam or Comp Cams 290/304 .558/558. Anyone have expirience with the Comp Cam? I believe the .557 is 252 @ .50 and the Comp is 260/266 @ .50

I would buy the Comp cam I don't like any of the Mopar brand cams I used in the last thirty years, they are cheap and you get what you pay for usually, esepcially on camshafts

You will need to wind that thing. Go big or go home, but since it's just a temporary engine, well, it may not perform all that well anyway. Those are some steep gears for those heads so with the smaller cams it will probably run out of breath by the 1000 foot mark.

Itll have a 14.5w x 32 slick so the gear wont hurt it as bad as a small tire car

I sold a 1970 Duster 340 4 speed car to a guy who became a good freind of mine later, he ended up using 5.57 gears with a 3.09 first gear with a 13x31 tire(it had a lot of other rear gears and tire sizes on it before that) I drove it several times with that trans and rear gear combiation, first gear change came real quick The little motors need that gear to make it off of the starting line with those size tires

It will still need at least 7000 RPM.

As long as the comp ratio is 10:1 or more, I would highly recomend a Racer Brown ST-21 or STH-42. Same cam; one hyd and other solid. Your combo should run 11.70 to 11.90 with either.

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

I'd use the Mopar cam. We've been using the Mopar cams since 1972 and have had ZERO problems.

The payout window doesn't know what cam the engine has in it.

Idc to turn it 7000 RPM if need be. Jim actually suggested the STX 21 and its really close to the Comp Cam I have listed actually so I suppose either cam will do the job

Of those 2 I would use the mp 557 and shift it at 7k. Any more and I think it would be over camming it.
