had my d shaft shortened. the place that did the work says its only good to 600hp. steel 3" .083" wall thickness and spicer 1350's. what do you guys think would be max power-torque off t brake with 3300# car? thanks
A 3" DOM would be much better... I use a 3.5" at 39" on the Rampage and thats 550hp but its only a 7000 rpm engine and torque is 520 ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif)

That is how it is formed Drawn Over Mandrel different then Electric welded, you do not see a seam on DOM

whats DOM?
Drawn Over Mandrel. It's a step above rolled tubing strength wise. Most stock shafts are rolled and welded. I assumed that you had a DOM shaft. If not, you definitely need to go that route no matter what size tube you use.

They're talking about the tube itself, not the welds to the yokes All of the cheap driveshafts, roll cages etc use ERW tube instead of DOM. DOM is stronger but more expensive. ERW = Electric Resistance Welded DOM = Drawn Over Mandrel ![](http://www.custom-choppers-guide.com/images/dom-erw3.jpg)

Ok than. Mine is Dom,no seam. A driveshaft shop in Lansing made it. I think there gone now.
If its painted you most likely wont see the seam... the outside of the seam is scraped clean during the welding process... the inner isnt scraped... if its not painted you will see a blue line if its mild steel ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wave.gif)

Driveshafts don't really 'see' horsepower but will certainly have a torque limit. OE shafts are only 0.060" thick and unknown material and have been used in much more demanding applications reliably. I think you've got plenty of safety factor and shouldn't worry about it. Of course that's assuming it's in good condition without dents or scrapes and with minimal runout. ![](/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/Twocents.gif)

I just ordered up a set of 3.5" 1350 spicer shaft ends and a 3.5" spicer .083 tube....shipped was less than 120$.....
welding it up to 53.5 center to center and using my hardened moser powerglide yoke I already had...using my old spicer 1350 solid u-joints I got laying around....
Lets see if it will hold up behind the twin 408 in the 5th aveneu!....oh yea, the spicer tube is welded seam...I just can't see spicer selling it if it can't handle a lot of brute force!!!!!!!

I think my d shaft is the mild steel. says custom steel on receipt, what ever that meens. does have seem down the middle longways. called dennys d shaft. he recommends the nitrous ready 3" with spicer 1350's. good to 700hp and with cm slip joint good to 800. look like i'm gonna have to speed some money.
