I am wondering what the correct method is for installing castle nuts and cotter pins.
Do you tighten the nut to the spec torque and then more to line up the hole for the cotter pin?
Or?
Thanks.

If you are working on front wheel bearings torque and back off.
Never have used a torque wrench on the them. Have always gone by the spin and feel method and never had one fail.

Loosen the nut and retighten a couple times and it may line up the hole for the cotter pin. I usually just tighten to align the hole. A true perfectionist would remove the nut and carefully remove a bit of the nut with a file.

I am working on front end parts, ball joints tie rods etc..
Some books say to shim the nut, which would be like shaving it.
But if you shim with washers it will be too high covering the hole.
I was just worried I am over stressing the bolt.

Tighten it down then tighten till the hole lines up and you can get the pin in. You never want to loosen the nut to line it up.
