After buying a couple junk yard 5.7 core motors i think i'm ready to start building my gen 3 hemi. My question is should i use my pre 09 heads or upgrade to the eagle head, I found new castings that can be delivered to my door for $750 for the pair. Plan is for a manley 392 kit with about 10.5 or 11 compression. drag pak intake and cam in the 230 to 240 duration range. So would the eagle heads be worth it compared to 1600 port and rebuild job on my existing heads?

the eagle head flows over 300 stock and will match up better to the drag pack intake.

I just got a intake from Muscle Mike and it is awesome

Glad you checked in sixpack. Moparnut426 said i should talk to you. Thats the intake i was thinking of accept i was thinking the shorter version. The head i was thinking of on from a 2010 ram 1500. Would that be the eagle head? The price for 2011 and new is about $100 per head higher. Any recommendation on where to get a cam? The only ones i have seen with more then about 220 duration are from hughes.

the Eagle heads are the 2009 a newer 5.7 heads I believe. There are a ton of threads on here, I suggest you start reading all of them

Ray, Racer33 has dug through every single inch of gen3 HEMI info. Why is there such a limit on cam choices, Seems only Hughes really offers a good selection. Honestly I havent really dug through the cam choices, but Ive done a little, and looked through comp, Hughes, and kinda fizzled out from there

How well do the stock lifters hold up to any performance upgrades? Is that an area of possible issues?

from what I understand, stock lifters are excellent. The cam choice problems could simply be that the arena for cams is similar to what the LS guys have. Ever hear someone say they run a TRex cam, ya well, I don't know what the hell that means either.

Arrington, HHP, BES and there are a few others that specialize in modern hemi stuff and they support the LX forums and they probably do more homework on the new hemi's than Comp does. This is not to say you can't call up Porter and ask him to spec a cam from Comp for a new hemi

They run the stock 6.1 lifters in the drag pack cars out to 8000+ with no issues at all. They're a very good lifter.

If you treat a hemi like an LS2/LS3, you will be way ahead of the game. Once you decide what piston you want, decide your cam from there.

So long as you stay away from lobes like the XE-R, you'll be fine.

Inertia Racing sell Crower grinds under there own branding....most are off the shelf fairly mild profiles...but they may have access to more race oriented stuff from Crower.

I know it gets into names and wording that doesn't apply to the older mopar stuff. You'll see plenty of cams with the name being really prominent and the specs being treated as a minor detail. It's part secrecy and part marketing. You're not going to get cam cards for a lot of the really good custom grinds, nor will they even mention what lobe they're running.

People are still treating these motors as voodoo. They're not.

Are there any direct questions that I can answer for you?

Have you ever measured piston to valve for the SRT Max in a 6.1?

I know what my Max Plus on a 110 LSA came in at...and its damn tight..

....just wondering what the normal SRT MAX 112 LSA P-V measures up as?

How tight? Also heard some G3 engine builder's use as tight as .027" quench.

I've not measured that cam, but I have measured a 219/223 in a 5.7/6.1 and a 223/227 in a 6.1.

Both had at least .040 PTV.

Mine is .068th on the intake side...110th on the exhaust...218/227 566/556 110 lsa

Ive been told that is reasonable as long as I run good valve springs.

Just curios what the std SRT MAX on a 112 comes in at......

My block is waiting in line at the machine shop now. It came from an 06 pickup. Are the plastic pugs in the valley available as replacement parts? If i have the block baked they will surely be gone. Should i just leave them and have it steamed?

I removed the bolts from the retainers and it doesn't seem like the retainers will come off without the plastic plug coming out and i'm pretty sure i cann't get the plug out with breaking it. Are they epoxied in?
