I have a 2004 Ram 1500 with a Hemi. About two weeks ago I noticed my garage smells like gas after I park the truck in it. The truck only has to run for a few minutes for this problem to occur. So far I have checked the gas cap,the filler tube from the outside of the truck to the tank. Yesterday I pulled off the air filter housing and checked to see if any of the injectors are leaking. None are leaking. I also checked all the fuel fitting connections I could find and have not found any leakage.

Today when I drove it I noticed the smell inside the truck as I was driving. I am hoping that a board member can steer me in the right direction. This problem needs to be fixed before it gets any worse.

Thank you, Raul

check the fuel rail. I have a 2005 and mine was incredibly and I mean incredibly rusty. the truck has a vapor system with a pump out back by the fuel tank (just in front of it). Lots of hoses, rubber, and nylon between the front and back. start checking for cracks and broken hoses.

Oh by the way, I had to do my fuel pump. the factory pump was broken in several places where it seals to the lock ring, and I'm sure that if it had gotten much worse it could have been a massive leak. vapor, possibly fuel. YOu can't know the shape it's in without taking it down which is a pain.

I believe if there is a vapor leak, though, it should eventually throw a DTC and put the engine light on

Yes I believe your gonna find a problem above the tank. Like shown above there's lot's places for it to leak vapors. Pretty poor design if you ask me. Chevy tanks don't cor road like that because I work on them at work.

Our 05 durango had the entire tank replaced under a recall at 50K miles mainly because it would puke fuel all over the ground when it got full, no matter how slow you went with the fuel nozzle.

Then the new tank leaked and they had to put another tank in the truck the next day after we got it back.

Now 40K miles later I am getting the check engine light. I read the code about 5 times now and reset it. It's a small evap leak is what the code says. Takes about a week for the code to come back and I suspect a problem up at the top of the tank again. Our's sits outside so we don't smell it yet.

Sorry to hear that. Stuff like this is a very strong reason to avoid repeat buying Chrysler, and I am sorry to say that. It makes a lasting impression

My 99 chevy dualie with 100K miles(low) has been great, needed a fuel pump once. Only because I was using a aux tank in the bed of my truck and it had rust in it.

No rust yet on the body and has all original running gear, front and back and original exhaust system. I did put shocks on it 3 times.

I'm going to replace it this week or next and am going to look at all three American makes seriously. I'm looking to run LP gas as fuel on my new truck and am afraid only Ford is going to be able to offer hardened valve seats for that use?

I had the same problem on my 04 HEMI Quad cab.
Broken fitting on top of the fuel pump. The high pressure/feed side.
Found it by reaching up on top of the tank after driving and there was a pool of gas around the top of the pump. I could see it spray looking above the rear tire when running and flexing the fuel lines.
Had to replace the pump assembly.

Based on your responses I crawled under the truck again. The first thing I felt was the fuel pump. It is near the front of the tank and has several tubes and wires going to it. It was bone dry.

As I moved my hand to the rear of the tank I found a round raised thing about 3" to 4" in diameter. I can not see it but it feels like the photo the VincentVega posted. Do you know what this is? It is covered with gas and there is a puddle of gas just below it by the side of the tank. Can you tell me what this is, and if I can replace it without dropping the tank.

Tahnks for all the suggestions.

Raul

I don't know what that is but I'm sure its emissions related.
The white waffle looking thing in the pic above is the fuel pump and yes I had to drop the tank, and its the 34 gallon one.

BTW I used a small hand mirror to see what was going on.

Sounds like you may be referring to one of the vents. They are connected with a tube. This may help you

There's one in the front (towards front of the truck) and one in the back in the same location. This is 26 gallon tank, 4x4 standard cab short bed. Some of the tanks are different

Unfortunately you can't work on any of this without dropping the tank or taking the bed off (may sound easier, but it's not)

as was mentioned earlier, it's a very poor design. untreated metal, and water tends to just lay in there, submersing it.
