70 Challenger, Right side brake lights weren't working. Thought it was as simple as replacing the bulbs. Still not working.

After looking at the wiring diagram, it appears the brake lights are seperated to right and left sides. The right rear turn signal doesn't work either.

Anyone seen this before.
I'm guessing it's the turn signal switch?

It's been a while since I've messed with that, I don't think it would be your turn signal switch if it's just affecting the rear. More likely, it's the wire from the switch. Does the front signal work?

seperate the ts/brake harness under the steering col & with your VOM on the col half of the connector see if you have continuity between the white "in" wire that is coming from the stoplight switch and the (2) left and right wires to the rear brake/ts large filaments. ( www.mymopar.com will have the colors for you) with the stalk in neutral. Should have continuity if the TS sw assy is good. On the body half of the connector jump fire to the (2) left/right br/ts wires one at a time & see if you have fire at the rear contacts (left & right sides) at the spring loaded base contact. if not check the pull apart connector under the DR kick panel for a bad connection and there's another pull apart connector in the trunk & possibly one in the middle of the body. If good & there's continuity to the rear see if the bulb socket has continuity to the body & the spring loaded contact tips are clean.

Yes, both fronts turn signals work. I'm a little suprised the brake light wiring runs up through the steering column.

IT has to in order for the signal lights to flash while your brakes lights are on . You have to remember that the turn signal and the brake lights use the same filament in the 1034 or 1157 bulb.

I guess it is the switch, or something in the column.
As suggested I tested the connection at the connector coming out of the column.

1) The White wire has power when the brakes are pressed.
2) The left side (Green wire) has power when the brakes are pressed.
3) No power to the right side (Brown wire) when brakes are pressed.

So somewhere in the path up and back down the column there's a break in the right side brake light.

I don't care about the right side turn signal, brake lights seem more important.

Any reason, for a short term fix, why I couldn't bypass the turn signal path?
Connect the White wire directly to the Brown, I'd remove the brown from the connector.

Turn signals and brakes lights use two different sets of terminals in the turn signal switch. That is why the signals can work and the switch still be bad and not allow the brake lights to work.

Making the right side operational that way would give you brake lights on both sides but non functioning correctly turn signals. Myself I would pull the steering wheel & inspect the TS switch ASAP, might be a loose/corroded connection & might not need to replace the whole TS assy.

Thanks for the trouble shooting help, it isolated the problem to the turn signal switch.

I replaced the switch and everything works now.
