Thanks to those who can help. I am trying to decide which way to go with changing my small bolt pattern rear axles to big bolt. What else do I have to change besides the brake drum and axles? Are wheel adaptors safe? Do I need just the adaptors to make this change? If I go with adaptors where do I buy them? Also will the adaptors change my wheel off set to much. They are going on a 75 Dart Sport. Thanks. toddemont@verizon.net

I have never seen a set of wheel adapters in person, but just by looking at pictures they appear to be 1/2" +/- thick. That may or may not require you to purchase new wheels depending on the backspacing of your existing wheels.

I would do the axle swap since it's the more 'correct' way of doing it in my mind.

Thanks for the advise neil. I have bought new wheels for my car but they are big bolt pattern. I am trying to save some money. I have not heard many conversations about the adaptors.

A guy I know just did the swap on a duster and he bought the parts from dr.diff, who is a member here.

For the front he was able to use the disk brakes from a 60's 5 lug mustang if I remember right. All he had to do was have the rotors machined to fit the mopar wheel bearing and the rest was a bolt on. I can't remember all the details, but it seemed pretty simple and low budget too.

It could depend on your offset of your wheels.

Most popular adaptor is 1" thick will that push the wheel out past the fender? if so you have no choice but to put axles on. Cost wise two adapters will cost you at least $82. Axle wise it will cost you at least $105 each axle bare no shipping.

IIRC The backing plate to axle face distance is different on the A bodies than on the B/E/C bodies.

If you have 10" rear drums now you are OK but if you decide to change the drums from 9" to 10" then you will have to be sure that you have a matched setup.

Dr. Diff can set you up well.

That car should have the big bolt pattern already. Unless youve installed an earlier axle.

I used to care but....... things have changed

Most states outlawed wheel adapters years ago, check yours before buying If the car makes any power at all don't use the adapters, go to a local machine shop and ask them if they can drill or machine the wide bolt pattern onto your axles and have them tap the holes for 1/2x20 threads per inch and get a set of 1/2x20 long wheel studs or grade eight cap screws and use them as your lug studs

Sounds like a lot of money in shipping just to get them redrilled. I thought I read somewhere there was not enough room in some of the small bolt axles to redrill a second set of holes.

free bump

Allen Here's a novel idea, let's not throw a bunch of parts at the car hoping it will fix the problem and instead spend a little time diagnosing it first. Life was a little easier when I was just a wrench.

moser has axles with the 4.5 wbp and the large brake offset and green bearings 299$ a pair

you need the backing plate, brake hardware, and drums to go with the axles

I used some from a 73 newport and got 11x2.5 brakes with there axles when I done my 68 Dart 8 3/4 rear

it made the whole rear a 1/2" wider also

back space on my wheels was 4 1/2" back space
