First time doing ladder bars and have them mocked up and have the ride height i want but looks like i'll only have about 11 inches from upper mount to lower mount. Does that sound right? or do i need to cut through the rear floor and bring the upper bar to a higher location? I havn't bought the shocks yet and not sure which ones will work. 68 dart 3200 lb car with me
What would a typical lenght coil over be?
What spring rate should i start with?

In general terms you want the longest shock you can get to allow for movement. Ladder bars will need a fair amount of extension so if it were me I woudl look to move some stuff to get a longer shock in there.

For what it"s worth....70 B body..3280 rear spring rate i use is 130lbs...in 12"...there appears to be more spring rates available in 12"(just take note....)not sure if your 11" inches is from top anchor of spring to bottom mount ,if it is you will definetly require more room, you should referance a site like QA-1 .....pat

The first coil over ladder bar car I drove had a set of 3 inch travel AVO shocks, 7 inches extended center to center, not good That car would fully extend those shocks on the starting line when foot stalling it against the converter at or above 3500 RPM My current ladder bar car has a set of Strange double adjustables that are 16.5 inches fully extended center to center,9.0 inches compressed center to center, lots of travel My upper mount is in the trunk above the stock trunk floor PM me if you want me to post a picture of it, not trick but it has worked very well 1.39 60 ft so far foot braking, not great but not bad either

what type of shock are you wanting to use? stock mount? aftermarket adjustable's? may want to concider a adjustable lower mount.

It;s an adjustable but i havn't welded them on yet, still trying to figure out what length shock to use but looks like i;m going to cut out some of the trunk to raise the upper shock support to achieve at least 13 plus inch height.

S&W sell a long shock mount that you use adjustable
brackets on... weld it on then get the longest shock
that will fit... make when you weld the brackets
on to give enough room for the pinion to be rolled up
or down for pinion angle... this is what the bracket
looks like.... once you get it figured out you can
cut the bottom off

Better to lower the bottom then raise the top. I had 14" qa1s on my 69 Dart. they bottomed out on our bumpy return road all the time. I switched to 17" and couldn't be happier.

On any coil over shock, you have to make sure your ride height is in the middle of the shocks intended travel. To close to either end will result in the shock topping out or bottoming out. In most cases, you will experience much less shock travel than you would expect. Dyno

The pictures I sent you show my shocks mounted on the upper end of the housing mounts to help clear the 31 inch tall slicks, I normally run it a lot lower, almost on the lowest hole combination with al the other tires I have and run That does lower the back of the car down but it doesn't move any more weight onto the rear tires according to my scales

Ok, Got the shock mount brackets in place, Shocks mounted and need to figure out how high i'm going to put the upper shock support. Reading the shock install instructions they want to have the lower adjuster at approximatly 1/3rd up the shock and they require 60% of the travel to be for compression. So far seems to be lookin ok. See anything that needs redoing?

How thick are your ladder bar brackets... they look
to be about 1/8" max... I would go heavier... 3/16"
and weld a gusset to the axle housing down to right
near the lower bolt hole to stiffen that otherwise
it can crack... here is a pic of my 9"... this pic is
before I welded on the gusset(I forgot it till I got
done painting... and I had the gusset laying there
on my welding table... but I wanted to paint it)

The gusset I'm talking about doesnt come with any
kit... if you look at my last pic you can see where
the lateral link hooks on at the right... that black
triangle thing slightly above is what I'm talking
about... get a piece of 3/16" stock and make one
(the bottom of the ladder bars where the lateral
link hooks on takes alot of side loading going around
corners)... also I weld a piece of tubing on the
bottom to attach to the shock brackets(part on the
rearend) to help stiffen those(bottom bar in pic)

Ok now i'm confused. Got the shocks mocked up and followed the instructions and even going past half way on the adjuster it will not begin to suspend the car. Shocks are DS 501 QA1 single adjustable and the springs are 12" and 130 lb all as recommended. I'm nervous about adjusting them too tight. If i were to try to put them in different holes i'd have to find a way to compress them. Any advice?
