ProTrans is 904 guts in a 727 case. True that the 904 parts are the best available, aluminum, billet, etc., but these trans hold up fine at 1000+ HP and 600+ Tq in 3200 to 3800 lb Super Stock cars, ET's in the low 8's to mid 9's. Good parts will live fine.

The question can be answered by another question,"How much money do you have?"
R.
If he has enough money to build a 800hp SB then he better have enough to buy a good trans, ect ect ect

You can try Rick at A1 also. increased line pressure, and harden input and output shafts. That is the horsepower level I was breaking out put shafts but with at little more weight 3350lbs. It can be done but expect to have 3500-4500 in your trans. I switched to a 727.

no they dont,, a planetary could break after 100 or so runs though,, so its a good idea to look at it every so often
if you run low line pressure you could burn it up,, a hemi car has about 150-175lbs

we have found the reliabilty of the ProTrans to be excellent. We did break a gearset a few years back when we ran the Cuda at minimum 3810+ lbs and we were pushing 640+ TQ, and we killed the forward clutches in it late last year at the Heartland Park Topeka Division Race, but typically we will freshen it up every 100 runs or so and we have no problems. The Protrans 727 is a full 25 lbs lighter than a stock 727, and .25 quicker.

A 904 in a lightish car of say 3000-3200lbs will handle 500ft/lbs with most of the standard hard parts. 904's don't have the friction cross section that a 727, Powerglide or TH400 has, so they don't have the torque handling capability.
A Proflite is a different trans to a 904. It's a 727 AMC case, with custom drums etc and uses a Powerglide converter.
There isn't an aftermarket case for the 904 or 727, so the standard case is what you're stuck with.
I maxed out 904 is going to set you back around $5k in parts and is going to require a lot of maintenance. Most guys that run them always have a spare.

A ProTrans can utilize a 727 case or a 904 case, ours use a BB 727 case and 727 convertors. With all the bells and whistles, 727 case, Trans Brake, position 6 nuetral, choice of about 30 gearset combos, 300M main shaft, all billet drums w roller bearings, cast alum pan, etc, yes, you are looking at about 6k, maybe a bit more. I believe all the same stuff in a 904 case is somewhat cheaper without the custom shafts to convert 904 sizes to 727, and the added labor to convert a 727 case to accept 904 guts. My nomenclature may not be 100% correct, but i believe that the ProTrans is the 727 and 904 Mopar versions, and the ProFlite are the GM cases converted to accept the 904 guts w powerglide verts for use in Comp Elim

The Proflite is an AMC 727 case with an adapter plate for the bellhousing that is about 3/4"-1" thick
