FWIW post. Just found out something that's a big road block on hemi flywheels and direct drive starters. The 66-69 hemi 11 inch fw has 172 teeth, the 383-440 fw has 143 and uses the reg starter. BUT! It seems the ring gear off the 440 wheel will fit the hemi wheel so now you don't need that 700 dollar starter and special blow proof bell, just a reg. 383 400 bell and mini starter.Any body who has went down this road will know what i'm talking about, a real ma-mopar head banger. hope this helps some one else.

Mopar switched to the 130 tooth wheel and regular starter in 1970 on the hemi.

What are you using , headers or manifolds on your hemi ? It's said 143 tooth wheel and starter location that the starter and the manifold want to occupy the same space. I haven't confirmed that yet and it WAS the direction I was going with the hemi in my bee ... but the sources that say it lead me to believe it's true.

FWIW

If you just want to dump the direct-drive starter, Mallory makes a nice replacement (P/N 3008M) and you can keep the original flywheel/bell.

I had a 440 in my 64 savoy 4-speed with a 11 inch clutch and blow proof bell (only one starter provision holes and made for 69 383-440)so when the hemi came around the 130 tooth wheel won't work with this bell also that direct drive starter has to have it's own bell bolt up pat. Headers I will make to fit ,but only about 1/2 inch difference for starter 130 to 143. Not sure how close the stock man fits.

I had a Hemi in my A12 4 speed Roadrunner with the original bellhousing and starter from my 440 for years. No mods were needed and I and never ever had a starter problem. I was running hooker Comp headers. I never tried it with the Hemi manifolds or a direct drive starter?

can you remember what flywheel you used, 10-1/2 or 11 inch clutch?

It would have been a 143 tooth wheel with the stock bellhousing .

One common thing here ... HEADERS, Wayne brewer was the one that said 143 tooth and manifolds do not mix on a HEMI ... Of course a 143 tooth 8 bolt wheel and 383/440 bellhousing will fit a hemi , it's the starter and the manifolds that are the issue. Change to headers , problem solved.

You cannot just switch from a 172 tooth ring gear to the 143 tooth on the direct drive flywheel and use a conventional starter. The distance from the face of the bell housing to the ring gear teeth are different on the direct drive setup.

It was a 143 tooth steel flywheel. I do not remember the brand. I could run either a 10.5" or 11" clutch.
