I can't believe the guys on here recommending to a young guy getting his feet wet in drag racing for him to reuse those bearings. NOW I see why so many of our members have their engines built "or should have" by other shops. A rebuilt engine would not leave my shop with those bearings. They would be placed were they should be, IN THE TRASH. Carry on EXPERt engine builders.

If you do reuse them start out by sanding them with 40 grit sand paper. That way they will HOLD some oil.

Hey just kidding about the 40 grit sand paper. I don't want someone else on here agreeing with me and you end up trying it.

Actually I thought the initial post was sarcasm. I assumed the poster knew they were junk which is why I asked about the complaint.

He did, if you click on his facebook link he makes it clear he knows they're junk.

I think the OP posted these pics because in his last thread he started another member had said this.

"I just went over to his house last night (lives about a mile from me) He and a "friend" tore the engine completley apart. I checked a few things and other than a basic hone job, there is NOTHING wrong with any of the parts he has! Bearings looked good, ring gap was ok, good balance job on the bottom end, crank looked good, nothing worth taking apart as I tood him several times over the past year."

I couldn't see it must have been set private or something.

IMO the pictures dont show enough detail to give an accurate assessment of what is going on. They dont look real good from what I see but more details would be needed to form an accurate opinion from my perspective. Could be a case of fatigue or poor machining or???

I also tend to think that the question being asked is not being asked for information purposes as much as it may be a fishing expedition. Maybe I'm wrong but just my

That looks like water/antifreeze in the oil kind of damage.

Did somebody do an intake manifold swap - run a bunch of antifreeze into the oil and not change it before running it?

Blown head gasket?

is that an input shaft bearing a few spheres short of a full set?

for what is the good life if not doing things thoughtfully?

You guys are right I do know they are in bad shape but obviously some other people think different. I could clean those bearings up and put them back in but what good what they be because they will only be good for about a season. I think it will just be best to replace them and either get those bearings cleaned up good enough to sell or use them for a back up set!

I wonder who would buy them? As far as being a backup set?, sure, back up to the closest file 13 and toss them in.

Guys............

1) It is real hard to tell a used bearings condition from a pic. ( A good bearing can easily look like s**t in a pic.)
2) The one half in one pic looks like it could be a little rough
3) Since he did not build this engine he does not know what the bearings looked like going in.........
4) Someone with some experience needs to look at these in person
5) Vernmotors bearings look very good and I would re-use them. Mine always come out looking great I can even see the lines from the dial bore guage. They go back in............. Better a devil you know then a devil you don't.......

After reading this young lads posts we all know he is on a conservative budget. So the most important issue is... What do the crank pins look like?? How round are the rods ? (Is there wear at the parting line of the bearings?? ........if so not good)is one side worn more then the other??

Let me throw this out there.......
If his rods measure round ,his bearing are not gouged or un-even wear, his crank pins are not worn or gouged and are round, his bearing clearance is good (.002 to .003)how could these bearings contribute to a failure???? On an engine like this the rod bearings should never touch the pins. If they do......... New bearings or old your still in trouble

Looking at the pics we see the coating worn away...... big deal some people polish that coating off with scotchbrite. So the coating means nothing...........

One major concern is he wants to run high rpm....... If he does, with out a doubt that will be when he runs into trouble...........

Flame away!!!!!!!

Your bring up some good points. The crank needs alittle attention at the very least polished. The rods have been reconditioned but probaly along time ago and need it again. That's something for the machine shop to tell me what's good and what's not. Block, crank, rods and probaly cam are going to get checked. The cam is a purple shaft but not sure if it's the 557 or 590. The block needs a hone job if not just bored out but will see. Everything needs professionally checked and measured to see what needs to be done and will just have to go from there! Another problem that we had was the timing chain letting the cam have some movement so that was throwing off timing and valve timing for the valve lash on our set up as well! Knowing a ball park figure of where the cam is about our springs are about 30-50 lbs low. The ports on the heads haven't been touched but yet they put possibly the 2.08 valves in. We won't know exactly to we get them measured but we are assuming that they are the 2.08's. So lot's of variables and stuff that is off in it's on little way with our combination.

The first pic of the rod bearing with the wavy pattern is the same pattern I had on a rod bearing and it was caused by a slightly bent rod.
check that rod for straightness.Good luck.

All they are good for is to mock up a engine(and
thats a basic mock up)

Those bearings wouldn't ever go back in anything I had to work on....
my labor hours are worth more to me than the price of the bearings.

And I wouldn't be keeping them for any kind of "backup" either.
Again - the labor.
