Brock,if I were you just starting out I would try to find a used set of 002/003 A body SS springs. Weld a chain to the pinion snubber and use it for a boat anchor when you go fishing. Get An effective but inexpensive rear shock like the Rancho 9 ways and a good set of 90/10 shocks for the front. Next, make sure the front end is loose enough to give you 4" to 5" of lift at launch. Find a set of used wheels with more backspace to get those big tires tucked in. I did some high 1.30 60 fts with a setup like this and the car was fairly consistant. At your HP level this would be an easy setup to tune and get some satisfying results. Just my

If you only have around $400 then I would recommend Cal Tracs, they work, I just saw the first leafspring car in the 6's at the street car supernationals and he was using Cal Tracs.

It works decent until you build an engine with enough torque to bend the springs and smash the pinion snubber.

Heres my take on a pinion snubber. Back in the late 70s I was running a Super Stock small block Duster. I had stock springs on it with a pinion snubber. The car would 60 ft in the low 1.60s to high 1.50s. I finally got my hands on a set of 002/003 springs, made sure pinion angle was correct and left the snubber on the car. The first time out the car did a 1.61 60ft. I spoke to a local Mopar guru at the time and he told me to take off the pinion snubber and clamp the front of the springs. He also told me if the ss springs were working properly there should not be more than 3 to 5 degrees rotation of the axle on launch and that a pinion snubber is only needed on a car with weak springs that over rotates. My first run after the changes was a 1.43. Never used a snubber again. Thats my experience.

Well, dads duster had a 440,forged crank, bill miller alum rods,.590 solid, Indy -1's with not much port work, Indy intake and 1050 dom...thru 3" exhaust it went low 10's pulling the front wheels about a foot in the air.

So the SS springs with the snubber worked pretty good!!!!

Mike, everyone has their own opinions based on what has worked for them and I respect yours. I'm glad it worked out for you.

Yeah up to a certain point they work well but in heavy cars with stroker motors and a track prepped well with VHT, two different friends of mine, one with an automatic the other with a stick, ruines their springs and pinion snubber.
The one with an automatic even had the front springs clamped, and it bent the springs right after the clamp, warped the front leafspring mounts, and bent the floor where the snubber hit.
My friend with the 4 speed kept smashing snubber bumpers and the springs finally bent.
These were both full interior Road Runners that weighed around 3800 lbs.
Another friend with a 440 in his low 10 second RR just tore the front spring mounts half way out using the same setup, but it lasted about 3 years before that happened.

I disagree Get the Cal-Tracs It is 2013 move ahead and you should be good till you hit 7's or 6's like above. What adjustment is there in SS springs? When you go for more HP ? I had a 10 second car with SS springs but would never go back to it! Buy it one time and be done with it! The upgrade from there is a better ( adjustable ) shock

Put some extra clamps on the front half of your springs, make them out of 3/16"-1/4" replace the ones already on it with these, take all the clamps off the rear springs, make sure when sitting on the ground looking at the top of your rear spring perch pass. side is at the 1:00 o clock position, drivers side is at the 11:00 o clock position, buy you some cheap 50/50 shocks, raise the snubber up to where you have a 1/4"-1/8" gap. This will "WORK GREAT" and save you some $$$!*!

PS This will be the best $$$ you have ever spent on the Race-Car!

Clamp the front of the springs. The pinion snubber is just a stop and it keeps the rear pinion in line with the drive shaft. Check your pinion angle and install it where the pinion will stay aligned within no more than 3 degrees difference. One inch clearance will usually line up to be about 7 degree pinion angle. The pinion stop keeps every thing aligned- no more bent shocks. Try additional clamps on the back might help.
