I was told when I got my car that it had SS rear springs. It's a 1970 Dart with 8 3/4 rear. The car hooks reliably most of the time with 29x9 Goodyears on 8 1/2 Centerlines.

My question is the right rear has always sat lower than left rear by about 3/4" Is this normal? Could they be on the wrong side? Should they have the same ride height?

They've been on the car for about 15 years and I'm considering a Caltrac setup. The car goes 11.40 @ 117. Would they hook better?

thanks

Jeff

The Duster has SS springs and they sit a little uneven. We just adjust the front torsion bars to get them where we like.

You have to level the car with torsion bar adjusment and re aligne front end to do it right.

MP notes that with some part numbers your car will not sit level. Mine doesn't sit level but it works so I'm happy

I just picked up some very old used 456 & 457 (3400 lb) SS springs.........and just looking at the different number of springs and lengths...........I wouldn't expect them to sit level.

Tweak the T-bars and go from there.

Why mess with a good setup... UNLESS your chassis
is at it's optimum. 15 years? I'd start looking at
the weak points for flex due to aging. Spring hangers/eye bushings, torque boxes, subframe connectors, front end/rear end frame stubs and the
upper mounting bracket for the rear springs. I'd never knock caltracs, but a good s/s spring setup is a proven combination till you reach single digit et's. From that point on, it's your choice of comfort.

Thanks for the replies. I have the front left 1/2" higher so when I sit in it they are level. Is this the right setup?

A slightly different topic is the torsion bars. I've got the original 340 v8 bars in there with Caltrac 90:10 shocks in front. How much difference would the drag or six cylinder bars make? The wheels don't come off the ground more than an inch on launch.

thanks

This is how my sons Dart leaves with stock 318 torsion bars. He has a .030 over 400 in it and it has run 11.40's @ 117 best with 3.91's and a 26 x 9 tire. He also has the 002 & 003 SS springs on it and 90/10 shocks up front. It is a street car he drives to the track. Ron

Jeff,

The easy to tell if the springs are on the correct side is to check the part numbers on the springs. I believe they are stamped on the short segment where they are held by the shock plate. The even part number in on the right side of the car and the odd number is on the left side of the car. Sorry I forgot to tell you this on Sunday.

I thought the way to tell them apart was the right side had more leafs than the left.

Also the right side sat a little higher than the left.

That's what i've always thought. Mine is higher on the right rear.

I allways get confused which is right and left side of car. Mine has the 002-003 springs and the passanger rear is higher.

Think of the left and right from sitting in the
drivers seat... the higher right side is the preload

My right is higher. They work darn well for what I am guessing is about 600-700 passes on them. I am not sure. They were on it when I got the P.O.S. 9 years ago.
