Tucson AZ,
At what point is it necessary to step up to a larger pick up tube and enlarge the oil passages on a 440? I'm pushing about 9:1 compression on my motor and am not revving it beyond 6000 RPM. It does have a high volume pump on it for what it's worth. I don't really feel as though the oil mods are necessary for me at this time but would like to know what you guys think about it. Thoughts?

oil mods are always a plus when done right but for your application are not necessary

I'll put it this way... I drill the block main holes
on any block so that isnt the first restriction...
its not a big thing to do... do I think you need a
1/2" pick up..... nope... also I like to blend the
pump holes for better flow.... these are things I
always do

I like to use the Federal Mogul narrow full groove main bearings and a high volume oil pump on all of my engine builds for street, street and strip and race only, regardless of compression ratio. On the roller cam motors I have the #4 cam journal on BB grooved so the rockers oil full time, that helps keep the valve springs cool I quit using the 1/2 inch pick ups a long time ago, if you need more oil volume switch to a external oil pickup system I do try to use the biggest oil capacity pan that I can run on that car and that appliction, my pump gas street and strip Duster has a 518C.I. low deck stroker in it that I rev to 7300 RPM for each gear shift, runs between 6500 and 7000 RPM through the lights It has the Mopar 1970/71 Street Hemi and 440 6 pak oil pan and the stock 440-6 pak 3/8 pickup on it The car runs low tens and high ines at 134+ MPH through the mufflers on pump gas motor only, 3450 lbs

What size bit do you use when you do this? Are there any special details I should know regarding the #1 journal or anything else before doing this. I'm thinking hard about just doing it while I have the motor apart.

Cab, what dizzy drive do you recommend then with the HV pump? I have a crane steel unit for my roller cam but they don't recommend it for the HV pumps, the bronze one I bought doesn't either. Tim

I run the standard Mopar drives on the flat tappet cams with the high volume oil pumps and the bronze/brass, what ever material they are, on the steel billet solid roller or steel billet hydraulic roller cams No noticable problems so far I think I ask Comp Cams about buying a composite gear from them for the steel billet race cams but they didn't make a gear for the Mopar V8 yet, either size That was several years back, maybe the next time I need one for a solid roller cam I'll ask again

You do need a deeper pan when using the high volume pump, as it will suck the pan dry pretty easily.
