I chose the smaller ex valve because of the closed chambers shrouding and the DC porting templates are for a std size valve 1.74. Im not trying to move the earth with this

What can be achieved with the 915s? Stock 220-230 cfm. Ported, 300+ cfm. With the porting templates, 250 cfm, maybe.

I'm sure you can make some good power with those heads, not a bunch but respectable. Did I see your post on Bigblockdart also? If so,I would love to have those 2 1/4 headers, but they wouldn't work on my car

250cfm would be ok for this engine, its old school nothing radical

72 block with 1/2" pick up, 7 quart sump, windage tray, stock crank, worked LYs 2295 TRWs and a .509 installed at 104, heads are at 78.5cc, .020 shim gaskets street dom with a 780 vac sec and or 800dp. T/A J 3800 conveter, manual 727 with 4.11s in a 70 A body sedan, should see 11s with ease

with the valves your using you might be better off with dual pattern cam to hold exhaust a little longer

I have an old set of 915s that are ported max wedge size on the intake side. From what I recall the valves are 2.18 and 1.88s. I don't use them but.. they were on a motor I bought awhile back.

The only thing I've found off on them is the valve guides weren't cut down and the retainers hit.

I had a set that were ported by mondello - 280ish on the intake - long valves 2.14 - 1.88- custom rocker shaft mounts 2" assembled height - state of the art in 1982 and were prone to cracking - cost then almost $3000 - you can buy eddy's today $1600 a set - not even worth rebuilding a set of 915's today

You paid TOO much for those heads!I got mine done in 1990 by Myles engineering on lorain that flow 280 also and have 1400 in them and canb I get that today?,no and these are std port size heads and I still used them till now going to a edelbrock victor and those iron heads are still VERY useable .To the OP ? I believe the template #' are in the 260 range.Nothing wrong with picking up a few HP on a budget.

The templates do not address the short turn, that is where the big gains are. If you don't know what you are doing there you can ruin the heads.

The usual increase from a template porting job is 45 - 50 hp. That means around 25cfm increase.

You need Dulcich's three part series on porting bigblock heads, plus look in our archives for Fast68's posts on portig stock heads. He makes his living doing this.

On the pre-346 heads the short turn is the key and as was mentioned above can easily be messed up.

I have used those templates many times and would not agree with a 45-50HP increase using them. Perhaps with bigger valves and proper shortside porting 45-50HP but not alone.

but I would run real cam like a .557 or .590. You wont run pump gas properly, so you may as well make some hp.
