I know a Physics professor that ran a car out of oil .... twice. I have two advanced science degrees, however, Experience has been my best professor.

read the operators manual ....

I am doing all of this research at a State University where the instructor is a reputable guide, and teacher. He has sat in with Joe Mondello and has been doing flow testing for a very long time. He is my operators manual. I have searched in my 200 page lecture note book, and it specifically says: "On the intake side, a radius guide should be used.(especially when comparing to other machines), If however you are only doing before and after comparisons, it is not needed."
I respect your opinion, and do not want to make anyone angry, because I have been helped on this post as well as many others. I am just stating what I have been taught. Thanks

DT,

Not to offend you, your teacher or Joe Mondello, .. who I spoke to yesterday, ..

I have been doing Pro stock, top sportsman, Comp elm, etc heads for 25 years, .. set MANY national records, ..
these guys are telling you the truth, .. you MUST use an inlet guide to allow the air to enter the port properly.
No Question.

DTT,

No, Don't let Him Know! Take in what he has to say, ask others, then figure out what is right. Experience is what you need. Take in what all people tell you and in the real world (trail and error) you'll figure out what is right and what is wrong! Teachers are paid by our Tax Dollars, some want to teach you to be a better person, some want to get their check and then you have there union. So learn to use your brain (Think!) and to read all books and information, and most of all, pay attention to the older experienced people. They Know! They've Been There, Done That!

DTT,

If cylinder heads is REALY what you want to work with, .. to earn a real living doing it you must understand fluid dynamics. You need to be an engineer to go much past the basic porting. You need to understand and use flow coefficients, area ratios,. etc.

The difference in todays job market place for a cylinder head guy is his/her education. If you have a fluid dynamics degree, .. and can program G code to run a CNC machine you'll get a good job. Otherwise you'll be stuck.

If on the other hand you see your self as a pro shop, like Chapman, CFE, etc.
then it's even MORE important to know fluid dynamics engineering and how to use it in cylinder heads. Shops like these do engineering for the manufacturers.

This discussion of testing with an air strainer would not even be a question with some basic fluid dynamics study.

here's a link to a few good books, .. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/3540416072/qid=1102954130/sr=1-5/ref=sr_1_5/104-4469133-4034347?v=glance&s=books

Do more searches on amazon for fluid dynamics books, .. and cylinder head books.
Read the vast amount of material available from SAE. http://www.sae.org/

Don't go bust on your teacher, .. take duster's advice, .. learn what you can from him but understand he's only one source.

I remember when I first got my bench, there were a couple of times in haste, I forgot to put the radius plate on the head.... Did'nt take long to realize it was'nt there when the head started to make horrific turbulence sounds, and the #'s were WAY low once you hit around .400", you'd look down and go DUH I forgot the inlet. Same deal with forgetting the spark plug. Occasionally still happens when in a hurry. It's easy to do on a tall bench like mine (especially when you're short LOL) and the plug side of the head is facing away from you, you don't actually "see" the plug. But as soon as you turn bench on and start cranking the knob at .100" and the head is flowing 140+ cfm @ .100" you immediately know something ain't right LOL. It's all a learning process.....

Jim,

I had posted my phone # here some place, .. or I thought I did, ..
yea, .. I would have liked to meet you.

I spent a bunch of time looking at CnC stuff, .. hangin at Sonny's booth with his CnC guy, long time friend, .. and of course over at Indy hangin with Ken & Herb.
