Just finished building 540 cu in with 440-1 heads cr 15-1 Comp Roller Camshaft running a toilet bowl on alcohol. When engine temp gets up around 170 degrees there is a clank sound, like you take a wrench & hit the tool box sound, but it's not from bearings or valve train sound, sounds more like a convertor bolt or starter engaging, coming out passenger side header. The header gasket does not appear to be leaking can not find any leaks in header, we pulled the header off the car to check it, flywheel torque converter bolts are not loose or hitting on anything, starter gear and flex plate are both new & show no scars, remove valve cover, the rockers are not hitting valve covers no broken valve springs, valve spring retainers not touching rocker arms, valve lash is perfect push rods are not hitting or rubbing anywhere on heads. I have the timing set at 35 degrees, it cranks, idles & runs smooth & perfect. The clanking noise does not effect anything, but I know it is not supposed to have it and we spent several hours trying to find where it is coming from & cannot find it. The sound coming out of the header does not sound like a "pop". Anybody have any ideas or suggestions? P.S. The headers are not stainless steel but they have been JetHot coated & were not kept clean but they now have a silver coat of VHT Header Paint.

spray NON flammable carb cleaner along the header gasket when running to see if the sound changes to see if it is a gasket issue

Thanks Mr_P,thats the one thing I have not tried yet. They are not slip-fit tubes, only the collectors, they do not make any noise till the temp gets up to 170 degrees and above. The bolts were all tight, the gasket show no signs of leakage when I pulled the header off to check for cracks on the inside of flanges, they have plenty of clearance, not rubbing on hitting on anything. I have never seen or heard anything like this before, that I could not find.I'm headed back out to the shop now and going to start checking and rechecking everything again. Thanks everyone for all the advice & help! Merry Christmas and a Happy New to everyone!

I just come back in from the shop, this is one of them deals where you just have to walk away from it for a few moments. The vale lash is perfect on both sides, did not have to relash a one, while I was at it I rechecked the valve springs, push rods they are not rubbing or hitting anywhere, you can spin them when checking the lash and they all appear straight.I have the header off and can not find any cracks, these are a set of headers we brought used no dents or dings the only thing wrong was they were never washed or cleaned so I just repainted them silver, but where one tube slides into the collector it not what you would call loose but you can see around the end of it going inside the collector there is no paint like it could have move a little. I'm 99.99% sure the noise is coming out the header or after looking at tube going into collector maybe could be from their but I doubt it. It does not have a regular beat like it is a bearing or wrist pin,if a lifter should have seen some clearance in the lash. But by all means thanks for telling me to check those, because that might be what I have to do next.Looks like I might take a couple of hours off and go start checking everything again. Thanks everyone for all the advice!!!

First time today I have had the time to do any work on the car again...and I guess what they say is True if you don't get it right the 1st time keep trying till you do.Found the problem!!!
I had noticed the spark plug on #6 looked very lean,so I checked the nozzel, line going to the nozzle,filter-not clogged, blowed air through the nozzel holder(don't really know the name)that the pill goes in to make sure the air vent as well as the nozzel holder was clean everything checked out fine. So today the 1st thing I done is pulled the nozzel holder out to see if I had damaged it...and their it was in the end of nozzel holder(the piece that goes into the intake)a small piece of the foam filter that goes around the out-side of it.The foam filter looks to be deteriorating and it pulled a piece down into nozzel holder. By it being foam it appears it was letting droplets of fuel come through instead of spraying the fuel in and that's why there was no dead cylinder. I know to check the filters to make sure they are clean, but never thought about them deteriorating. Also I never thought there was a need to cover the air bleeds when blowing them out,but from now on will put a small piece of rubber hose over them to make I get enough pressure going through them. Maybe this info. will help someone in the future. And THANKS everyone for the help!

Im just not sure if the above would equate to a clanking noise. Unless your suggesting the miss is causing another source of clanking noise. I thought most other possible sources were dismissed already.

It was a new engine build & just started it on warm up,so hopefully it did not hurt anything sounds fine now.
PS I would have never thought something like that would have make a clanking sound either.
