I was reading the post on going 9.90 at 3800 lbs and got to wondering what a B1 head motor would do with a flat tappet cam. Revs would probably need to stay at 6800 rpm or less, so lots of cubes would be needed. I am thinking a 535 cube 440 based stock block motor with B1 orginals and a Comp .650 lift 290 duration cam ought to make some serious power on the cheap? Would it make 800 hp done right? Tell me your real world experiences!

I have wondered this too Greg.. I kicked around the idea... I love the .650 comp cam, and use them with my 1.75 rockers for some fast action. But, I went ahead and picked up a Old UltraDyne solid roller for cheap, so...

Bob, that Ultra dyne may be aggressive on rate of lift. I had some broken spring issues, but then they were K1000h springs, known for trouble. For the 650 cam I like the idea of a high ratio rocker, as long as it will work at higher rpm. I have thought that this would be a good place to spend money on Ti intake valves and run a stock ratio exhaust rocker to stay with the steel exhaust valves. Even with TI valves, I am concerned about going much beyond about 1.6 rocker ratio. That would yield .693 gross lift, which should work pretty good. A guy can get caught up in spending some $$ on this stuff, but if the reliability is good the investment in Ti valves makes sense to me.

Ron, I have never run the 650, but a local racer had one in a 499 with ported 440-1 heads, 3200 lb car went 9.70s If I recall correctly. I would think that cam should make within 50 hp of a big roller?

Sasquach on here really enlightened me on this cam...I only ran 1.5 rockers...OTB -1's...not even port matched...a 1050 Dom with the 2" adapter...26 degrees of total timimng and was way fat on the tune...I wanted an easy to dial motor....like I said...footbraked off a 2 step..left 10.75 on the window for a whole season running it....He told me low 10's were easy with my combo if I'd have turned it up a bit... I'd say this cam with an excellent port job could take a 3200 car down to 9.50's if you squeezed it hard....everyone fears mech tappet cams....do it right and they are cheaper and close in numbers.
