What test can I do and what should I look at for results spinning it by hand?
Thanks

not sure exactly what you're looking to do distributors aren't very complicated

make sure there's no binding or slop in the bearings. if it has an advance mechanism that's not locked you can check that it moves freely. you can check the pickup with a ohm meter the resistance should be around 500-700 ohms. if you have access to an analog voltmeter you can also connect it to the pickup (on millivolt scale) and spin the distributor it should make the meter fluctuate

Dvom and drill. If I remember right .5 volt slow and increase with speed. It is just a magnetic pulse generator. generates A/C volts. On a scope you can watch the sine wave.

Reluctor air gap and shaft bearings. I had a bearing fail on one.

Thanks guys the voltage generated is what I can't seem to find. MSD says if the resistance is 500 to 700 ohms then the pick up it's testing fine.
I'm having what seems to be intermittent spark and sometimes no spark will be testing spark manually then what to bench test the dizzy to see if the pick up is generating enough voltage to trigger the MSD.

I do suspect it may be a rusty reluctor want to do some before and after clean up tests.

May get a new reluctor and pick up to install for next season but want to diagnose this missing and no start problem before I make my winter decisions.

Thanks guys

well I only have a multy meter
did find these but not sure what they mean

and these but look like for a scope

yesterday I had the coil wire off when it was running bad and then would not start rolling it over only got one one snap??
So I put my spare coil on and snap snap snap snap snap snap.
so it starts right up and runs real good for a minute then it starts to run rough again stalled it won't start?? anyway started after a run at the track but compression test is OK put RC12YC's in to eliminate or lessen any fouling problems my colder plugs may cause. checked the cap and wires the look good just that one that is too short!
Have to put my car trailer where it goes for the winter and then more testing!

Well hear is what I have so far
resistance in the pick up is 550 MSD says 500 to 700
rolling it over with starter I get .28 to .31 volts.
Think MSD say the threshhold is 3.4 don't know what that means.

I'll be pulling it out later advance seem to be fine seems tight??

All I did from yesterday was pull the distributor and check it pick up resistance was 550 MSD says 500 to 700 is good.
turning over it gave .31 to .28 volts. MSD say that does not matter?? so the reluctor is real rusty and some on the pick up too.
So I took the distributor apart and cleaned the rust off as best I could on the reluctor got the faces real clean with emery cloth.
Test again and pick up resistance is 570 and the cranking over volts are .34 to .28 much the same.
Put the distributor in and set close it fires right up I hold it at 1800 it stays there rock solid till I get it up to 180.
Let off it idles at 1500 in neutral and 1000 in gear. thought it would have been higher as I thought I turned idle screws up quite a bit to get 1400/1500 missing yesterday and it would not stay idling in gear.
anyways I check the timing and it is at 21 so I turn it up to 39 and now idle is at 1800 + so I turn it down put emerge on block front tires and set it to idle 1100 to 1200 in gear still way cool. shuts off and just touch the key and it fires back up.
Video is just touching the key on both start ups.
I did put Dialectic Grease on dizzy connector to 6AL.

maybe that was it??

Yea It was running like crap stalling after a run down the 1/4 then it stalled and would not start. Oil pressure was fine started and ran good later for about 15 seconds then got crapy soon stalled and would not start. so compression test was good at home chande plugs to warmer ones for testing then coil still running like crap! wanted to know what we were into before I pull the motor (or if) Checked pushrods and rockers at the track.
I thought you know I've heard of guys hear saying the trouble they have had from Rusty reluctors on MSD thought well that's next. Dam it runs great now so I'm just going through the transmission for next year and I should be good to go Wee Haa

Thanks Guys.
we got snow last night just a couple inches but it seems cold out 27 and 14 mph west winds!

Even in the snow?

Did notice this fall sometimes it would pop in the burn outs and be testy to start especially cold now it's great! like I told my machinist and pit crew lets go back sunday! LOL. snowing and 27 so time to get my ski's out! He said it sure sounded terminal when you came back from that run now it sounds great!

Was just out to turn the heat on and 37 deg in the shop couple little squirts it starts right up and not much effort to keep it running!
I would like to go to the track and try it guess I'll have to wait for april 3/4" snow on the lawn and still only 30 deg outside.
