I'll try this here. Lately I have been looking for a new aluminum radiator for my car. I notice that those listed for a sprint car usually have 4 AN coolant fittings on the top vs a single hose connection. Why?

A better seal, faster to deal with vs a rubber hose, they usually have a high psi rating large line rather than a hose, and pluss its cool...

Oh and high RPM might have something to do with it.

Water fittings on the heads.

As I know nothing about the workings of a sprint car, I was only assuming that they were taking the water directly from the heads.

I helped out on a sprint car team in the early 2000's. Really neat engines. No belts; everything is engine driven. Power steering pump is driven off the back of the camshaft, dry sump off the front of the camshaft and waterpump off the front crankshaft. No provisions for a stock type waterpump or thermostat outlet. On Chevys the manifold is tapped for two or four AN fittings that feed the radiator. No flywheel, throttle response is crazy fast.

Aren't those all alky motors - requiring minimal cooling.

Yes, radiators are quite small for the power they are making.

This makes more since with the W9's.

I have 2 sets, W9 and W9-RP and both use AN fittings (3ea. head) for cooling ports. There is no cooling manifold or thermostat for them.

Sprint car, drag car - doesn't matter. If you need a custom aluminum radiator you should call these guys:

Saldana Racing Products , (as in "Joey Saldana")
Tel: (317) 852-4193

They hooked us up with a NICE unit for our '64 Belvedere, but their main focus is sprints, midgets, etc.
